Vinery Stud’s young sire Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) was handed his fourth first-crop winner on Wednesday as the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Equation (2 c ex Purcentage by Onemorenomore) ran out a convincing winner of the Magna Grecia at Coolmore Australia Maiden 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Randwick’s Kensington track.

Equation had finished unplaced on debut at Randwick in a race won by the unbeaten Peltzer (So You Think), but he made amends for that performance with a two and a quarter length victory over the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Falcon (Not A Single Doubt), while Falcon’s stablemate Sharpshooter (Hinchinbrook) finished another length and three quarters adrift in third.

The Maher and Eustace yard have enjoyed an incredible season with their juvenile’s and Equation’s victory handed them their 31st two-year-old victory of the season.

Winning jockey Tommy Berry was impressed with the colt, but believed he would shape up to be more of a three-year-old type.

“I think in time you’re going to see a really nice progressive young horse,” Berry said.

“He’s probably more a three-year-old and I think the best is yet to come.”

The colt was purchased by Aquis Farm for $110,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Sledmere Stud draft.

Equation is the second foal out of winning Onemorenomore (Red Ransom) mare Purcentage, who is herself out of Listed scorer Spurcent (Flying Spur), her first foal - Creative Spirit - an unraced daughter of Wandjina (Snitzel) - was purchased by Noble Bend Farm for $3,500 during last week’s Rosemont Exclusive Online Sale, which was held on the Magic Millions online digital platform.

Spurcent herself is a half-sister Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Glorious Days (Hussonet) and Listed winner Bangalore Bullet (Hussonet), while she is the grandam of Group 2 winner All Legal (Al Maher).

Purcentage’s colt by Coolmore Stud’s exciting young sire Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) was purchased by Kennedy Racing for $105,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale earlier this year and she has weanling filly by Newgate Farm’s stallion Russian Revolution (Snitzel). The mare was covered by the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) again last November.

Equation joins Incredulous Dream, Major Murphy and Spokesman - who will be looking to emulate his sire in Saturday’s JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm - as Press Statement’s other winners and he will stand for a slightly reduced fee of $13,750 (inc GST) in 2020, having stood for $16,500 (inc GST) in 2019.
