Arrowfield Stud-based Snitzel (Redoute's Choice) looks to have a pair of promising juveniles on his hands as Tolkowsky (2 g ex Brilliance by Street Cry) and Sixgun (2 c ex Acquired by O'Reilly) broke their maidens on Wednesday.

A rare Godolphin homebred winner by an Arrowfield Stud-based sire, Tolkowsky prevailed in a close finish to beat Roppongi (Kuroshio) by a neck in the John Allman Maiden Plate (1105m) at Sale on debut, while the Mark Newnham-trained Sixgun scored a three quarter length win over Camerlengo (More Than Ready) in the Harry Angel at Darley Maiden 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury, also on debut.

Trained by James Cummings, Tolkowsky is out Brilliance (Street Cry) - an unraced half-sister to Group 1-winning pair and now Darley stallions Epaulette (Commands) and Helmet (Exceed And Excel), while she also counts Group 2 winner Pearls (Exceed And Excel) as her half sibling and Group 3 winner and sire Bullbars (Elusive Quality).

Further back this is the family of Group 1 winner National Defense (Invincible Spirit) - who shuttles to Sun Stud in Victoria.

In 2018, Brilliance produced a filly by Darley-based stallion Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and the following year she foaled a filly by Astern (Medaglia d'Oro), while she missed to Lonhro (Octagonal) in 2020.

The gelding is bred on the same cross as Listed winner Sandbar.

Sixgun is out of seven time-winning stakes placed O'Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Acquired, making him a brother to Group 2 winner Splintex, while he is also a half-brother to stakes-placed duo Invictus Salute (Exceed And Excel) and Acqume (Sepoy).

Acquired herself is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Hips Don't Lie (Stravinsky) - the dam of Group 3 winner Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock) Listed winning and Group 1-placed mare Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock), while she also counts the dams of Group 3 winner No More Tears (Darci Brahma) and Listed scorer Weatherly (Beneteau).

The colt is bred on the same cross as two stakes winners; the aforementioned Splintex and Listed winner Snitzkraft.

Acquired missed to Counterattack (Redoute's Choice) in 2018 and she produced a filly by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice) in 2019.

"He's probably a bit more physically developed than Splintex at the same stage but he's got a few wayward traits that Splintex didn't have," Newnham told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"We've had to iron that out with a few trials and a change of gear. After his last trial we've put the cross-over noseband on him and that seems to have worked well."

Meanwhile, Covent Garden (Exceed And Excel) - a half-sister to champion mare Winx (Street Cry) - finished well beaten in sixth.

Snitzel is on the cusp of winning his fourth Australian sires' championship, while he is also leading the champion two-year-old title.
