Vinery Stud-based second season sire Headwater (Exceed And Excel) was handed with a quinella at Hawkesbury as Winds Of War (3 c Headwater - Mediator by Danewin) led home Head On Up in a maiden handicap over 1000 metres on Thursday.

The Garry White-trained Winds Of War finished third in both starts as a juvenile and he put that experience to good use when coming home three-quarters of a length clear of Head On Up, while Princess Betty (Smart Missile) was another two lengths further adrift in third.

Bred and raced by Hobartville Stud, the three-year-old colt is the fourth winner out of three time-winning Danewin (Danehill) mare Mediator.

Mediator herself is a half-sister to Listed winner Whisper Bay (Royal Academy), who in turn produced fellow Listed scorer Indian Thunder (Manhattan Rain), while she is also the half-sister to the dam of Zeditave Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner He'll Haunt Us (Time For War).

Meanwhile, she also counts Ravenswood (Woodman) among her half-siblings and she produced Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Hurtle Myrtle (Dane Shadow) - the dam of last season's Schweppervescence Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Holyfield (I Am Invincible).

Further back this is the same family as 1988 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Star Watch (Bletchingly).

Headwater sired 13 individual winners last season, headlined by Group 3 winner Wisdom Of Water and the stallion has made a good start to this term, siring three winners, while his daughter Aquagirl finished a good third in the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield last weekend.
