MAMARAGAN winning the Schweppes Skyline Stakes Picture: Racing and Sports

Many good colts have kicked off their Classic year in the San Domenico Stakes, including last year when Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) took out the 1100 metre contest en route to victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) and other promising three-year-olds have taken out the race, such as Pariah (Redoute’s Choice), Star Turn (Star Witness) and Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) and it has proved a good jumping off point for colts ahead of their classic year. We take a look at the pedigree of all six of the runners in Saturday’s contest.

Osamu (Exceed And Excel) will be looking to shed his maiden status in the Group 3 having failed to get on the scoresheet in four starts as a two-year-old and will likely start as the outsider of the field. The three-year-old colt will be looking to become the second son of the Darley-based sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill) in as many years to land the Group 3, following up the victory of Exceedance in last year’s edition. He is out of Typhoon Tracy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Written Dash (Written Tycoon), while further afield this is the same family as Group 1 winners Sizzling (Snitzel) and D’Argento (So You Think).
