The first juvenile trials of the season were run on Tuesday and a pair of fillies by first-season sires and trained by Lee Curtis shone in their prospective heats at Randwick.

I Love Lucy - who is by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero) put in a smooth performance over 735 metres, while Avaricious - by Newgate Farm's Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) - won her trial over the same distance.

Purchased by her trainer for $150,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January, I Love Lucy went to the front in the early stages and travelled well on the rail. She maintained that lead into the straight and held off the challenge of Little Miss Magic (Written Tycoon) to score by three-quarters of a length in a time of 44.07 seconds. Schwarzenegger - who is by fellow first-season sire Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) - finished another five and half lengths away in third.

The daughter of Maurice is out of unraced Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Lustrous, who has produced one winner. Lustrous herself is half-sister to the dam of 2013 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) Gypsy Diamond (Not A Single Doubt).

Maurice has made an excellent start with his first two-year-olds in Japan, siring nine winners. The Shadai Stallion Station-based Maurice stood at Arrowfield Stud for the past three seasons, but due to coronavirus the son of Screen Hero (Grass Wonder) will not return to the Hunter Valley stud for the upcoming breeding season.

In the next heat, Avaricious scored in a time of 43.36 seconds. She went straight to the lead from the outside barrier and held that position into the straight when she was asked to quicken with 200 metres left to travel. She responded well to hold off the challenge of Maurice's Medad (Maurice), who was beaten by a length and three-quarters.

Mistaken Identity (Press Statement) was another three and three-quarter lengths away in third.

The filly was purchased from the draft of Sledmere Stud by Mystery Downs and John Foote Bloodstock for $200,000 at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and the China Horse Club-bred filly is out of winning Super Saver (Maria's Mon) mare Zenon.

Zenon herself is a daughter of Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Countess Christie (Marscay), making her a half-sister to Listed winner I Have No Fear (Rock Of Gibraltar).

Extreme Choice is standing at Newgate Farm for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).
