Coolmore Stud’s Vancouver making waves in both hemispheres

Coolmore Stud second season stallion Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) has made a good start to his career in the breeding barn, siring 19 individual winners and his stakes winners count leapt to three over the weekend with two of his daughters - Night Raid and Madone - landing valuable black type races on separate corners of the globe.

Night Raid’s victory in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday added another update on a very active pedigree page.

Purchased by Sheamus Mills and Mick Price Racing for $160,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of her breeder Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, the filly is out of Listed winner and Group 1 placed mare Raid (Pins), making her a half-sister to Group 3-placed Mujallad (Redoute’s Choice) and Listed-placed Tarismo (Testa Rossa).

Raid herself is a sister to Purely Spectacular - the dam of dual Group 1 winner and now Widden Stud-based sire Stratum Star (Stratum) and dual Group 3 winner Prague (Redoute’s Choice), who finished second behind King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) in the Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) last season and looks to be future Group 1 winner in the making.

The filly’s fourth dam is six-time Group 1-winning mare Emancipation (Bletchingly), who was crowned Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1984.

Emancipation never reached the dizzy heights as a broodmare that she did on a racecourse, producing three winners, headed by 1989 Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Royal Pardon (Vice Regal).

However, her daughters proved good producers with her winning daughter Animation (Vice Regal) producing 1998 Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Magneto (Scenic), while her other daughter Virage (Kenmare) was the dam of dual Group 1 winner Virage De Fortune (Anabaa) and Avenue (Anabaa), who landed the three races at Group 3 level and also finished second in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m).

Emancipation is also the grandam of Railings (Zabeel), who landed the Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2005.

Night Raid’s fifth dam is the unraced mare Ammo Girl (Gunsynd) - the dam of five winners including Group 2 winner Appreciation (Sovereign Rocket) and Deliberation (Shifway), who in turn produced Group 3-placed Many Hands (Handy Proverb).

Many Hands herself was the dam of Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Dextrous (Quest For Fame) - the dam of Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Skilled (Commands), Group 2 winner Ambidexter (Commands) and dual Group 2 winner Sidestep (Exceed And Excel).

All three of Dextrous’ Group winning sons have found places at studs, with Skilled standing at Riverbank Farm, Ambidexter residing at Cornerstone, while Telemon Stud stand Sidestep, who sired Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning filly Kiamichi in his first crop.

Vancouver - who won the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in 2015 - shuttled to Coolmore Stud’s Ashford base in Kentucky for two seasons and Madone’s victory in the Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes (Listed, 8f) at Del Mar will no doubt have breeders in America hoping the son of Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) return in the future.

The stallion’s first crop includes South African Grade 2 winner Mount Pleasant and he is standing at Coolmore Stud for $30,250 (inc GST), having stood the 2019 term for $44,000 (inc GST).
