Former Westbury Park shuttler Makfi (Dubawi) chalked up his 33rd stakes winner on Saturday as the Matthew Smith-trained Attorney (5 g ex Tia Kia by Montjeu) produced an impressive performance to win the JRA Colin Stephen Quality (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill and could back-up in next weekend's Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick.

The OTI Racing-owned five-year-old was last seen finishing fourth over 1800 metres at Rosehill and he clearly appreciated the step up in trip, beating Djukon (Jukebox Jury) by a length and a quarter, while Grey Lion (Galileo) - who is also owned by OTI Racing and trained by Smith - was another nose away in third.

"He was impressive today and I suppose with that run under his belt it might be time to take a chance," Smith said.

"But I'd like to speak to the owners and Terry [Henderson] before we think about it."

After being purchased by David Redvers for €52,000 at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale, the gelding was sent into training in France with Mikel Delzangles and was purchased by Terry Henderson's syndication company after his first victory on his second start and he made his winning debut in Australia at Newcastle on June 8, 2019.

The gelding is one of two winners out of dual-winning Montjeu (Sadler's Wells) mare Tia Kia, who is herself a daughter of French Group 3 winner Antioquia (Singspiel).

Antioquia also produced Indian Listed winner Commodore (Danehill Dancer), while this is also the family of Listed-winning duo Arthenus (Dutch Art) and Rouen (Bering).

Makfi's five Group 1 winners include three New Zealand elite scorers; Bonneval, Sofia Rosa and Marky Mark. The son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) - who shuttled to Westbury Stud for six seasons - stood at Tweenhills Stud in the northern hemisphere, before being sold by Qatar Racing in 2016 and now resides at Japan Bloodstock Breeders' Association.
