Captivant sheds maiden tag at Randwick
Newgate Farm’s exciting young stallion Capitalist (Written Tycoon) sired his first winner on Saturday as Captivant (2 c ex Speedboat by Commands) landed the Victory Vein Plate (1000m) at Randwick and fittingly the colt was trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, who trained his father throughout his career.
The two-year-old colt showed his class when winning a Randwick barrier trial last Monday and he produced an impressive performance to beat Akihiro - who is by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero) - by a length and three-quarters, while She's All Class (I Am Invincible) was another neck away in third.
Snowden admitted that it was a risk running the colt so soon after his first barrier trial and he was impressed with the way the two-year-old handled the task.
“To do that with a two-year-old, you wouldn’t do it. Only with the ones you think can handle it and obviously he can,” Paul Snowden said.
“That’s why it gives me so much confidence knowing that he has so much more to give. He is nowhere near where he needs to be.
“He’s that raw he’s still frozen.”
Snowden says the stallion’s first crop have been ultra-impressive with ability and attitude to match.
“They’re lovely types to deal with and this bloke is only going to train on,” Snowden said.
“You only have to look at this bloke to see he’s a mean, lean machine.
“He’s got so much physique about him and the attitude that Capitalist stamps all his stock with, they’re exciting.”
The colt was purchased by China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and Starlight Racing for $550,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Ashleigh Thoroughbreds draft earlier this year.
Captivant is out of Speedboat (Commands), who is herself a half-sister to Listed winner Cross Current (Keltrice) and the dam of New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia d’Oro) and Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Willow Creek (Tale Of The Cat).
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist stands at Newgate Farm for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).
