Tell us about your 2020 draft?
It ticks all the boxes and everything has gone to plan so I'm excited. I think our draft is really strong and I think the colts I've bought here are all really nice. In previous years we've had one or two nice horses but the rest of the draft haven't been great, but this year I've been very selective as to what I've taken to the sale and I'm hopeful that they'll all sell well.

Is there anything you look for in a horse for the breeze ups?
I think they've got to be by attractive sires and they've got to have a page as well as being a type. It's alright to have a nice type and nothing on the page, but we go to all the yearling sales and horses have got to fall into the price bracket. This year we're doing horses for ourselves as well as clients. The main thin you have to do is to tailor towards the market that you're selling too.

What has been your biggest success at the breeze up sales to date?
We've only done this for the last few years - this is our third year. The first year we bought a Declaration Of War out of Classic for $20,000 and sold him for $200,000 to Casper Fownes. He's just won in Hong Kong. Last year we bought a Deep Field for $21,000 out of Scone and sold him for $320,000. He's with Anthony Freedman in Melbourne and by all reports he's a nice horse.

Do you think there have been any changes to the breeze up sales in recent years?
I think that the perception was that people was trying to sell their bad horses where as nowadays there is a market for buying nice horses that have been educated properly. Buyers can come to the sale and see a horse and its action. The bottom end is hard to sell, as at any sale and I think that you can buy a really nice horse from the breeze up sales these days. I think the sales are getting stronger each year. For an owner buying a yearling they have to get it broken in and edudated where as at the breeze up sale they can go and see how a horse gallops.
