Newgate Farm’s first season sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) enjoyed an across the Tasman double on Saturday taking his total winning tally to two.

The Jamie Richards-trained Palamos (2 c ex Unrevealed by Forest Wildcat) kicking off the brace of winners when he scored over 1000 metres at Te Rapa, while Tiger Of Malay (2 c ex Sambar by More Than Ready) added to a second winner to the stallion’s record when landing the Forum Group Kirkham 2YO Plate (1000m) at Randwick.

Rider Troy Harris had Palamos away nicely from a handy barrier as he stalked pacemakers Miss Ipanema (Sacred Falls) and King Of Reds (Burgundy) throughout the 1000 metres contest before drawing clear over the final 150 metres for a decisive two length win over Miss Ipanema. King Of Reds was another nose away in third.

An NZ$85,000 Book 1 Sale purchase by David Ellis from the Ainsley Downs Stud draft at New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling earlier this year, Palamos backed up two impressive trial wins with his debut performance and has now put himself near the top of the qualifying table for the Karaka Million 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie in January.

“He’s a nice horse who had impressed us at home and who had trialled up very well beforehand,” Richards said.

“We thought he could go close and it was a good win as Troy [Harris] tucked him in nicely behind them and brought him out at the right time in the straight.

“Troy is exceptionally good at educating the younger horses and this colt will learn a lot from today.

“He can go in the paddock now for a couple of weeks, put some weight on and then we can put a programme together to get him to the Karaka Million.

“That win should be enough to qualify him, which is great as with the money in the bank early on, we can afford to pick and choose just where we take him to get him to the race.”

Palamos is raced by Hong Kong-based businessman Edmund Wong who became involved with the Te Akau Racing operation after contacting Ellis.

“This is the first horse we’ve started for Edmund Wong, who lives in Hong Kong, and it’s a real honour to have horses in training for him,” Ellis said.

“He rang me out of the blue one day and asked me to buy a weanling for him.

“I had trouble deciding between three and he had me buy them all. Although not early two-year-olds, they are all showing something.

“I then bought this yearling, which he liked, and I recently bought the full-brother to Werther for him as he also owns the mare.”

Before being offered as a yearling, Palamos was purchased by Paul Willetts Bloodstock Consultancy for $65,000 at the 2019 Inglis Great Southern Weanling and Bloodstock Sale and he is out of the four-time winning Forest Wildcat (Storm Cat) mare Unrevealed.

Unrevealed herself is a sister to Grade 3 winner Brownie Points, the dam of Grade 2 winner Synchrony (Tapit), Grade 3 winner Chocolate Kisses (Candy Ride) and Listed winner Points System (Broken Vow).

Last season Unrevealed produced a filly by Extreme Choice’s barnmate Deep Field (Northern Meteor) and was covered by Bull Point (Fastnet Rock) last November.

Meanwhile at Randwick, the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained Tiger Of Malay beat Cerda (Snitzel) by half a length with the same distance back to Mura Mura (Not A Single Doubt) in third to hand Extreme Choice is second winner.

Freedman said that if the colt comes through the win in good order he will consider a start in the Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill in two weeks.

“He is a lovely colt. We’ve been fortunate enough to be given a few of these by Newgate and their bloodstock partnerships,” Freedman said.

“He will learn a lot from today. There is improvement to come.”

Purchased by China Horse Club and Newgate Bloodstock from the Tyreel Stud draft for $255,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year, the colt is out of winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Sambar, making him a three-quarter brother to Group 3 winner Samizdat and he is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Samovare (Savabeel) and a further three winners.

Further afield this is the same family as Group 2 winner Push The Button (Encosta De Lago), South African Grade 3 winner Rio Carnival (Hussonet) and Listed scorer Nevet (Zeditave).

In 2019 Sambar produced a colt by Darley stallion Lonhro (Octagonal) and after missing to Exceed And Excel (Danehill) last season, she has been covered again by Lonhro this season.

Extreme Choice stands at Newgate Farm for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).
