The Matthew Dunn-trained Subterranean (2 c ex Caves by Bernardini) got off the mark at the second attempt as he shed his maiden status over 1200 metres at Doomben on Saturday and in the process handed Glen Eden Stud-based first-season Rebel Dane (California Dane) with his first winner.

The two-year-old colt proved far superior to his rivals, surging clear to beat Collay's Spirit (Charm Spirit) by three and a quarter lengths, while You'll Be Mist (Headwater) was another nose away in third.

Subterranean is the first winner out of four-time winner Caves (Bernardini), who is herself a daughter of fellow four-time scorer From The Cellar (Hennessy).

The colt’s third dam is Listed scorer Dipping (Straight Strike), who is the grandam of Listed winner Aldini (Magic Albert).

In 2019 Caves produced a brother to Subterranean, while the next season she foaled a colt by Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock).

Rebel Dane stood the 2020 for a fee of $5,000 (inc GST).
