German-bred Skymax wins Australia Day Cup for Mark Newnham
German-bred gelding Skymax (5 g ex Set Dreams by Galileo) won his second race in Australia when taking out the Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Warwick Farm on Tuesday. The win provided his sire Maxios (Monsun) with his eighth stakes winner whilst he is the 189th stakes winner out of a Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare.
Trained by Mark Newnham, Skymax, with a 6kg weight advantage, beat Wolfe (Novellist) by a nose with three lengths back to Kaapfever (Sufficient) back in third.
"We've had a really good run through the summer in these types of races and this guy is another one who still has good improvement to come," Newnham said.
"He didn't begin as well as we hoped so he was in a tricky position but Robbie rode the race to suit the horse with a nice light weight and made it a good contest.
"He has been a really nice horse for the stable in the small time we've had him."
Bred by the Niarchos Family and sold for €49,000 to Alex Elliott at the 2017 BBAG September Yearling Sale, Skymax was formerly trained in England by Ralph Beckett. He is out of the once-raced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Set Dreams who is a half-sister to four winners including the stakes placed pair Disegno (Fastnet Rock) and Psychometry (Danehill Dancer). His fourth dam is Myth To Reality (Sadler’s Wells) who produced 11 winners including the multiple Group 1 winning pair Whipper (Miesque’s Son) and DIvine Proportions (Kingmambo).
Maxios is standing the 2021 season at Castle Hyde Stud in England where his fee is set at €7,000.
Daughters of Galileo meanwhile have produced 33 Group 1 winners including Arrowfield Stud-based sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), Darley’s Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) and Coolmore’s Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) as well as multiple Grade 1 winner Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie) and Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Invincibella (I Am Invincible).
