Bourbon Flyer makes winning debut at Randwick
Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) was handed his fifth winner on Wednesday as Bourbon Flyer (2 c ex Kentucky Miss by Foxwedge) made a winning debut over 1100 metres at Randwick-Kensington which saw the stallion move ahead of his barnmate Capitalist (Written Tycoon) in the leading Australian first-season sire table by number of winners.
Trained by John Thompson, the two-year-old colt pulled clear in the final stages to beat Syracuse (Sebring) by a length and a half, while Trifaccia (I Am Invincible) was a further nose away in third.
“He’s a very professional colt and has been from day one a very straight forward horse,” said Thompson.
“He has a good horse’s attitude and aims to please so there is more to come from him.
“Flying Artie is a promising stallion, they are all very similar to him, correct, sound athletic horses.
“We’ll have a throw at the stumps now with this colt and have a run in one of the Slipper lead up races.”
Purchased by his trainer for $50,000 at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft, Bourbon Flyer races in the same colours that his sire Flying Artie did, with Wilf Mula and some members of the family of the late Paul Whelan sharing in his ownership.
The colt is out of the Listed-winning Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) mare Kentucky Miss, who was purchased by Ashton Bloodstock for $250,000 at the Inglis Sydney Broodmare Sale last year, while her stakes winning dam Twelve Pack Shelly (Deputy Storm) was purchased by Mitchell Bloodstock for $37,500 via the Inglis Digital February (Early) Sale earlier this month.
Kentucky Miss’ 2019 filly by Flying Artie was purchased by John O’Shea Racing for $52,500 at the Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale, while in the 2020 she produced another filly by the Newgate stallion and she has most recently been covered by Yarraman Park-based sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).
Flying Artie moves one ahead of Capitalist by number of winners and he has eight lots catalogued at Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, which gets underway in Melbourne on February 28.
