Star Thoroughbreds-raced son of Fighting Sun lands Mowbray Stakes
Having beaten Group 1 winner Mystic Journey (Needs Further) in the Thomas Lyons Stakes (Listed, 1400m) earlier in the month, the Star Thoroughbreds-raced Newhart (5 g Fighting Sun - Jesting by Commands) continued his excellent form when landing the Mowbray Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Launceston on Wednesday.
Trained by Lisa Gaffney and ridden by Craig Newitt, Newhart was asked to quicken on straightening and he responded well to pull right away in the closing stages, posting an impressive length victory over Mandela Effect (Turffontein). Swoop Dog (Husson) was another nose away in third.
Newgart was bought for $60,000 by Star Thoroughbreds and Paul Willetts at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale from the Fairways Bloodstock draft and took his race record to eight wins from 15 career starts with his earnings now totalling $316,400.
The gelding is out of Jesting (Commands), making him a half-brother to stakes-placed Derasa (Squamosa).
While further back the gelding hails from the family of multiple Group 1-winning champion Fantastic Light (Rahy) and Group 1 winner Your Song (Fastnet Rock).
Last spring Jesting produced a filly by Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) and was covered again by the Coolmore Stud-based sire in November.
Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor), who died at Sun Stud last year after suffering from colic, has sired 97 winners from 199 runners with Listed winner Chess Star his other stakes winner. He has also sired six stakes placegetters in Roccabascerana, Gulf Of Suez, Entrapped, Platinum Mam’selle, Miss Inbetween and Celestial Sol.
The stallion has one filly catalogued at this Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, which gets underway on Sunday.
