New winners for Arrowfield Stud shuttlers
Arrowfield Stud shuttlers Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) and Maurice (Screen Hero) both sired new winners on Friday. Shalaa’s third winner in Australia was provided courtesy of Cheerful Legend (2 c ex Jemison by Commands), who landed a maiden over 1200 metres Moonee Valley, while Maurice’s second winner came in the shape of Mazu (2 c ex Chatelaine by Flying Spur), who won over 1100 metres at Canterbury.
Trained by John Sadler and raced by Bon Ho, Cheerful Legend showed a good turn of foot off the bend to draw clear in the final stages to beat the fast-finishing Micro (Medaglia d’Oro) by a comfortable two lengths. Treporti (I Am Invincible) was a further two and a half lengths away in third.
Cheerful Legend was purchased by his trainer for $600,000 - the most expensive yearling to be sold by Shalaa in 2020 - from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
The colt is out of placed Commands (Danehill) mare Jemison, making him a half-brother dual Group 1 winner Contentment (Hussonet) and is from the same family as Group 1 winner Align (Night Shift) and Group 2 scorer Fritz’s Princess (More Than Ready).
Shalaa’s first Australian crop is headed by Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Shaquero, who also landed the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). The son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) has sired 27 winners in total and he has 12 lots catalogued at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, which gets underway on Sunday.
In 2020 Jemison produced a brother to Cheerful Legend and she was covered by Shalaa’s barnmate Dundeel (High Chaparral) last October.
Meanwhile, Maurice’s new winner was provided by the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Mazu (2 c ex Chatelaine by Flying Spur), who led home a quinella for the stallion when he defeated Conrad by a neck. Jai Lei (Sebring) was a further length and a quarter away in third.
Purchased by his owners Triple Crown for $180,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the Parsons Creek Pastoral draft in 2020, Mazu is out of Group 2-placed Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Chatelaine - whose three other winners are headed by 2009 Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Headway (Charge Forward).
Maurice’s total winner count stands at 47, headed by Grade 3 winner Pixie Knight and also includes four stakes placegetters and due to the coronavirus pandemic the stallion did not return to Arrowfield Stud for the 2020 breeding season.
The stallion has six lots catalogued at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
