Equation lands Canberra Guineas and hands Neasham biggest win of short career.
Vinery Stud-based stallion Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) sired his first stakes winner on Monday when Equation (3 c ex Purcentage by Onemorenomore) landed the Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m) and in the process also handed Annabel Neashem the biggest win of her career since taking out a trainer's licence.
After settling mid-field one off the fence, Tommy Berry made his move pulling the colt out to the centre of the track on the turn and finished strongly to beat High Supremacy (Savabeel) by three-quarters of a length with Kermanding (Kermadec) a further nose away in third.
Neasham was narrowly denied her first stakes win on Saturday when Mo'Unga (Savabeel) overcame a torrid run to finish second in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the young trainer said Berry had been confident Equation could atone of that unlucky performance.
"It's always good to tick that off," Neasham said.
"Obviously we had a slightly frustrating day on Saturday, we went very close in the Randwick Guineas.
"Tommy was very confident he said 'don't worry, we'll make up for that on Monday' and he was right.
"I don't know how at home he was in that shifty ground, he's a progressive colt."
Neasham said she would now go in search of further stakes riches with the colt.
"We'll just reassess whether he goes to something like the South Pacific over The Championships," Neasham said.
"I think he is just going to keep progressing, I'm sure he'll eventually get a mile."
Formerly trained by Neasham's old bosses, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Equation has won four his five career starts and earned $182,665 in career prize-money.
Bred by China Horse Club, the colt was purchased by Aquis Farm for $110,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the Sledmere Stud draft.
Equation is the second foal and the only winner out of winning Onemorenomore (Red Ransom) mare Purcentage, who is herself out of Listed scorer Spurcent (Flying Spur), her first foal - Creative Spirit - an unraced daughter of Wandjina (Snitzel) - was purchased by Noble Bend Farm for $3,500 during last year's Rosemont Exclusive Online Sale, which was held on the Magic Millions online digital platform.
Spurcent herself is a half-sister Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Glorious Days (Hussonet) and Listed winner Bangalore Bullet (Hussonet), while she is the grandam of Group 2 winner All Legal (Al Maher).
Purcentage's colt by Coolmore Stud's exciting young sire Vancouver (Medaglia d'Oro) was purchased by Kennedy Racing for $105,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale last year, while her filly by Newgate Farm's stallion Russian Revolution (Snitzel) was bought by Triple Crown Syndications for $195,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier in the year.
Last spring the mare produced a colt by Russian Revolution and was covered by Cosmic Force (Deep Field) in November.
Press Statement has sired 26 winners in total and he stood at Vinery Stud for a fee of $13,750 (inc GST) in 2020.
