Night Raid sparkles in Matrice Stakes
Vancouver filly lands her second stakes victory

Having landed the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in November, the Mick Price and Micheal Kent Jnr-trained Night Raid (3 f Vancouver - Raid by Pins) added a second stakes win to her CV when she landed the Matrice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Morphettville on Monday.

Wearing blinkers for the first time, Night Raid raced to a three-quarter length win from Second Slip (Alamosa) with Port Vale (Master Of Design) a length away third.

Purchased by Sheamus Mills and Mick Price Racing for $160,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of her breeder Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, the filly is out of Listed winner and Group 1 placed mare Raid (Pins), making her a half-sister to Group 3-placed Mujallad (Redoute’s Choice) and Listed-placed Tarismo (Testa Rossa).

Raid herself is a sister to Purely Spectacular - the dam of dual Group 1 winner and now Widden Stud-based sire Stratum Star (Stratum) and dual Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Prague (Redoute’s Choice). After slipping to Exceed And Excel (Danehill) and missing to Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) and Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor), Raid has most recently been served by Darley-based sire Impending (Lonhro).

198 for Dubawi
Ironclad takes out CS Hayes Memorial Cup

Darley’s linchpin stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) sired his 198th stakes winner on Monday courtesy of Ironclad’s (5 g ex Heat Haze by Green Desert) victory in the CS Hayes Memorial Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Morphettville.

Trained by Will Clarken, the British-bred five-year-old gelding defeated Ritratto (Fiorente) by a length and a half, while Lord Vladivostok (Tavistock) was another neck away in third.

Ironclad began his career in Newmarket with trainer Hugo Palmer and Juddmonte Farms for whom he won two races for and with Monday’s victory the gelding - who is now raced by Australian Bloodstock - remains unbeaten from three starts since arriving in Australia.

The five-year-old hails from one of Juddmonte Farms’ most prolific families, being out of dual Grade 1-winning Green Desert (Danzig) mare Heat Haze, who has produced three other winners, including last year’s Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Mirage Dancer (Frankel).

Heat Haze herself is a daughter of blue hen mare Hasili (Kahyasi) - making her a half-sister three time-winning Group 1 winner Banks Hill (Danehill), who in turn produced fellow Group 1 scorer Romantica (Galileo) and Listed scorer Ideal World (Kingmambo), while she is the grandam of Group 3 winner Sangarius (Kingman). Hasili also produced top-flight winners Intercontinental (Danehill), Cacique (Danehill) and Heat Haze (Green Desert), Champs Elysees (Danehill), who proved to be top-class sire, and Group 2 winner and fellow successful sire Dansili (Danehill).

Dubawi has sired 21 stakes winners in Australia, headed by Group 1-winning quartet; Srikandi, Secret Admirer, Tiger Tess, Shamal Wind and Benbatl.

150th stakes winner for Medaglia d’Oro
Beautiful Gift wins Santa Ysabel

Former Darley shuttler Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) sired his 150th stakes winner on Sunday when the Bob Baffert-trained Beautiful Gift (3 f ex Sea Gift by A.P. Indy) landed the Santa Ysabel Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Santa Anita. The three-year-old filly is out of winning mare Sea Gift (A.P. Indy), making her a half-sister to fellow Grade 3 scorer Chitu (Henny Hughes). Medaglia d’Oro shuttled to Australia for eight seasons, but did not return in 2018 and he is now represented in Australia by his three sire sons, Vancouver, Astern and Nostradamus. Medaglia d’Oro is standing at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for a fee of US$150,000 in 2021.

Second stakes winner for Barbados
Struck By wins Morphettville Guineas

Ducatoon Park-based stallion Barbados (Redoute’s Choice) was provided with his second stakes winner on Monday when the Travis Doudle-trained Struck By (3 g ex Cheers Rihanna by General Nediym) landed the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m). The three-year-old gelding had won his previous two starts and he beat Milton Park (Written Tycoon) by a quarter of a length, while Angelic Secret (Teofilo) was another length away in third. The gelding was purchased by his trainer for $26,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale and he is one of two winners out of the winning General Nediym (Nediym) mare Cheers Rihanna. Struck By joins Garner as the stallions other stakes winner and he stood the 2020 season for a fee of $4,400 (inc GST).
