Startantes gets off the mark at the second attempt at Ipswich
Vinery Stud’s first-season sire Star Turn (Star Witness) was represented by his third winner on Wednesday when Startantes (2 f ex Funtantes by Easy Rocking) broke her maiden over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm.
Startantes, who had finished second on debut at Ipswich last month, scored a two length victory over Mishani Untamed (Husson) with Mishani Esprit (Bel Esprit) a neck further back in third.
Settled back at the tail of the ten runners, Startantes rounded the home turn with only one runner behind her. Into the straight, she made her run down the outside and showed a good turn of foot to score a decisive victory.
Startantes was bred by her trainer Robert Heathcote and his wife Vicky races the filly in partnership. She becomes the second winner from as many foals to race out of Heathcote’s Group 2-winning mare Funtantes (Easy Rocking). The filly’s second dam is Cantantes (Just Awesome) who also produced multiple Listed scorer Excellantes (Falvelon).
Funtantes has a yearling filly by Russian Revolution (Snitzel) and a weanling colt by Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo). She was covered last November by Rothesay (Fastnet Rock).
Another daughter of Star Turn ran well on Wednesday with Sonnet Star (2 f ex Seven Sonnets by Poet’s Voice) making a pleasing career debut when finishing one and a quarter lengths second to Najmaty (I Am Invincible) in the Charlotte Inglis Maiden Handicap (1000m) at Randwick. The filly is trained by Damien Lane for Vinery Stud.
Star Turn’s first crop also includes dual winner Miss Hipstar and winning colt Pegasi, who placed third in the Inglis 2YO Millennium (RL, 1100m), while Astrologer placed third in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m). He is currently sitting in fifth place in the Australian leading first season sires table by earnings.
