Daughter of Zed set for Ranvet rematch with William Haggas-trained gelding
The Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant (Zed) is set to renew her rivalry with the William Haggas-trained Addeybb (Pivotal) when they line up against each other for the second consecutive year in the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Addeybb came out on top in last year’s Group 1, beating the daughter of Zed (Zabeel) by half a length, while a few weeks later Addeybb held an almost three length margin in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).
However, Waller believes Verry Elleegant - who was last seen posting a gutsy victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) - is a better horse than she was last year.
"She's come back well and you could see last start how tough she is,'' Waller said.
"She's up for a fight and I'm looking forward to it.
"(In the Ranvet last year) we headed him and he fought back. I reckon if he goes to try and fight back this year there might be something there."
“She's stronger than she was last year, the proof is when they race.
"There's no indication we could see that she's better but she's stronger, she's simply stronger.
"Her winning ability looks to have gone to a new level but she dead set fights like she hasn't before. She's a remarkable horse."
