We review all the runners in Saturday's Group 1 race

The Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) is for many the highlight of the racing calendar and this year’s race looks a mouth-watering prospect. From a bloodstock point of view it is a unique running of the Group 1 with seven of the 15 runners all by first-season sires, which will make for interesting viewing. 

Shaquero

By Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit), who has made a good start with his first-crop of runners in Australia, Shaquero is out of dual-winning mare Fimatino (Not A Single Doubt). Fimatino is herself a half-sister to Listed winner Catacaos (Catbird) and the dam of Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner and now Rosemont Stud sire Shamus Award (Snitzel). A last start winner of the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), the colt landed the Breeders Plate (Listed, 1000m) and Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and he will look to emulate Capitalist (Written Tycoon), who was the last horse to win the two races en route to the Slipper.

Profiteer will be out to emulate his sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon), who landed the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in 2016. The two-year-old colt will be out to bounce back to winning ways, having surrendered his unbeaten record in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on March 6 when he finished a close second to Anamoe (Street Boss) who re-opposes again on Saturday. Profiteer is out of Group 3-placed Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Athena Lass and she is herself a half-sister to stakes winner Euryale (Lonhro). The colt’s third dam is Group 1 winner Danglissa (Danzero), who is herself the grandam of Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Unite And Conquer (Hinchinbrook) as well as Group 3 winner Sweet Redemption (Snitzel). Should the colt win on Saturday, he will provide Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) with his second win in the race as broodmare sire, with 2014 winner Mossfun (Mossman) also being out of a daughter of the Arrowfield Stud-based sire.

Artorius is aiming to become only the sixth horse to win the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Golden Slipper Stakes, with Sepoy (Elusive Quality) the most recent winner of the famous double in 2011. The son of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) is out of the unraced Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Gracie’s Lass who is herself a daughter of Listed winner and Grade 1 placed More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Grace And Power, dam of Darley Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Delectation (Shamardal).

From the first Australian-bred crop of Darley shuttler Frosted (Tapit), Ingratiating comes into the race the winner of both the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m). The colt is the fourth winner and first stakes winner out of 2011 Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Obsequious (Lonhro).
 

Anamoe

The son of Street Boss (Street Cry) will be out to become the seventh horse to win the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and go on to win the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on their next start, with last year’s winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) landing the Group 2 before his victory in the Group 1. Anamoe is out of SAJC Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Anamato (Redoute’s Choice), whose three other winners are headed by Irish Listed winner Anamba (Shamardal). Anamato herself is a half-sister to 1996 Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Drum (Marauding) and also hails from the same family as Group 1 winners Grand Armee (Hennessy), Yourdeel (Dundeel) and Dealer Principal (Flying Spur).

Home Affairs comes into Saturday’s race having finished second on debut in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill on January 30 before breaking his maiden in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) three weeks later. He was most recently seen finishing third in the Todman Stakes and should he win, he will provide his Yarraman Park-based sire with his first juvenile Group 1 winner. I Am Invincible has sired 33 juvenile stakes winners to date; eight of those winning at Group 2 level. The colt is out of the three time-winning Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Miss Interiors, making him a half-brother to dual winner and Group 1-placed colt Aysar (Deep Field). Miss Interiors herself is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner and now Newgate Farm-based first season sire Russian Revolution (Snitzel) and Group 3 scorer Turbo Miss (Sebring). Further back this is the same pedigree as dual Group 2 winner Montelimar (Alleged) and Listed scorer L’Extra Honor (Hero’s Honor).

The son of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) will have history against him when he tackles the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday, with only one horse in history winning the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) en route to victory in the Rosehill Group 1 and that was Catbird (Danehill) in 1999. Kalashnikov, who has raced five times to date, comes into Saturday’s race having won his last two starts. He is the second winner out of dual-winning Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Rough Ride. Rough Ride herself is a daughter of Wedgetail Eagle (Lure), who has proved herself a top producer with her 12 winners headed by 2016 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Eagle Way (More Than Ready). Meanwhile, Wedgetail Eagle is also the dam of Group 2 winner Assertive Eagle (Danewin) and Listed scorers Impressive Eagle (Rubiton) and Soaressa (Twining), who in turn produced Group 3 winner Thermal Current (Exceed And Excel) and Listed winner Forever Free (Exceed And Excel).

Having taken out his first two starts in impressive style by a combined margin of almost seven lengths, the son of Newgate Farm based first-season sire comes into the Group 1 off the back of fourth place finish in the Todman Stakes. The colt is out of winning Anabaa (Danzig) mare Nothin Leica Storm, who was purchased by Kingstar Farm for $90,000 at the 2018 Inglis Chairman's Sale carrying this colt in utero. Further back this is the same pedigree as Group 1 winner Wonderful World (Anges World) and Listed-winning duo Wonderful Lass (Catbird) and Husson Eagle (Husson). 

 

Rocket Tiger

A winner of his first two starts in December, Rocket Tiger finished a close second in the Silver Slipper Stakes on February 20 and was last seen finishing third in the Black Opal Stakes, beaten a length and a half. The son of the lesser known Larneuk Stud-based sire Cluster (Fastnet Rock), who covered only 53 mares in 2017, is out of three time winner Takook (Keltrice) and will be looking to become the first stakes winner in two generations of his family. Further back, the gelding hails from the same family as Group 3 scorer Niarchos (Space Cadet).

A winner on debut over 1000 metres at Randwick last October, Captivant finished fourth in the Golden Gift (1100m) and was last seen finishing third in the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) behind O’President (Fastnet Rock) who was scratched from the Group 1 race earlier in the week.

The daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) was last seen winning the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick and the Group 2 has proved a good lead-up for the Golden Slipper. Should the filly come out on top on Saturday she will become the eighth filly to land the double, with Estijaab (Snitzel) the most recent winner in 2018. Glistening is out of Group 3 winner Beethog (Shovdog) and she is herself a half-sister to stakes-placed Gypsy Mai (Our Maizcay) - the dam of Listed winner Rom Baro (Time Thief).

Four Moves Ahead enters the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with an unbeaten record to protect, having broken her maiden at Randwick-Kensington on January 2, while she was last seen winning the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on February 27. Four Moves Ahead is out of unraced Mr. Greeley (Gone West) mare Doulmera, making her a half-sister to Group 3 winner Emeralds (Sebring). Doulmera herself is out of Group 3 scorer and Group 1-placed Daltaya (Anabaa) and she also produced Prix de l’Opera (Gr 1, 1800m) winner Dalkala (Giant’s Causeway). Further back this is the same pedigree as multiple Group 1-winning champions Daylami (Doyoun) and Dalakhani (Darshaan).

Swift Witness was last seen running second to Glistening in the Reisling Stakes. Third on debut in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) before breaking her maiden over 1100 metres at the Gold Coast on January 9, the daughter of Star Witness (Starcraft) then finished tenth of 16 runners in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). The two-year-old filly is out of winning Commands (Danehill) mare Taylor’s Command, making her a sister to stakes-placed Terminology. Taylor’s Command herself is a half-sister to Group 2 winner So Pristine (Zabeel) and Listed scorer Restored (Red Ransom), while she is also half-sister to the dam of Group 2 winner Dijon Bleu (Burgundy).

The two-year-old filly will look to become the second Golden Slipper Stakes winner in as many years for the now pensioned stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) following up Farnan’s victory last season. Mallory is one of four winners for her dam Panorama Ridge (Empire Maker) who also produced Te Akau Racing’s Listed winning filly Sassy ‘N’ Smart (Smart Missile). Panorama Ridge was bought by Freyer Bloodstock for US$160,000 at the 2010 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and is herself out of French dual Group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat).

Another filly by Not A Single Doubt, Queen Of Wizardry will be out to hand rookie trainer Annabel Neasham a memorable win since going solo earlier this year. Having broken her maiden on debut at Doomben, the filly followed that up with a fast-finishing fourth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). Queen Of Wizardry is the third foal and first victor out of three-time winning Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare Miss Hufflepuff. Miss Hufflepuff herself is a daughter of Irish Listed scorer Miss Helga (Alzao), making her a sister to Hong Kong Listed scorer Liberator and stakes-placed mare Pink Siris, the dam of Group 2 winner Etana (Shamus Award).  Further afield this is the same family as Grade 3 scorer Alexis (Alzao) and Listed scorer Mike Fox (Giant’s Causeway).
