Regally bred Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) filly, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Chimes (2 f ex Time Check by Shamardal) made a winning debut at Newcastle on Tuesday.

Last seen running second behind Yearning (Snitzel) in at trial at Rosehill on March 15, the daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) - who was ridden by Tim Clark - was quick to begin and raced on the outside before gliding to the front with 300 metres left to travel to post a length and a quarter victory over pre-race favourite Heavenly Field (Deep Field). Snowdrop (Capitalist) was another by head further away in third.

Waterhouse and Bott’s stable representative Neil Paine said Clark said the filly was ready for a trip to races after her trial two weeks’ ago.

“It was the right move to come here off one trial,” stable representative Neil Paine said.

“Tim said that after the trial, she was ready to go to the races. I liked her last 100 metres when Tim asked her to go, she really stretched her neck out.

“She is not really big, just a tiny little thing, so hopefully, when she does go for a spell, she will grow and get a bit stronger because the ability is there. Many horses have been small; as long as they have the heart and can gallop, that is a big plus.”

Chimes the first foal out of winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Time Check, who was herself purchased by Badgers Bloodstock for 300,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2017.

Time Check is a daughter of Group 2 winner Alizes (Rory’s Jester) - the grandam of three-time Group 1 winner Alizee (Sepoy) and fellow Group 1 winner and now Darley-based sire Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) and Newgate Farm’s new sire Tassort (I Am Invincible), who was placed at Group 2 level.

Further back the filly’s third dam is Group 1 winner La Baraka (Euclase) - the grandam of Listed scorer Cuba (Encosta De Lago), while Chimes’ fourth dam is multiple Group 1 winner Triscay (Marscay).

Chimes’ sister was purchased by Willinga Park Operations and Australian Bloodstock for $625,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year, while in 2020 she produced another filly by Snitzel and she was served by Snitzel’s barnmate The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) in September.

Chimes becomes Snitzel’s sixth two-year-old winner of the year and the sextet are headed by New Zealand Group 1 winner Sword Of State. The stallion has 45 lots catalogued at the Inglis Australian Yearling Sale, including Lot 277 who is bred on the same cross Chimes.
