Newgate Farm’s Capitalist (Written Tycoon) chalked up his eighth first-crop winner on Monday when Gleneagles (2 c ex Scarlet Billows by Street Boss) - who was having his first start for David Payne - resumed from a spell with a victory over 1000 metres at Hawkesbury.

Previously trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, the two-year-old colt finished second in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) on debut on December 16, before posting a fifth place finish in the Magic Millions 2YO Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm on January 2 after which he was spent for a spell.

The colt was very slow to begin, racing three lengths off the field in the early part of the contest, but recovered well to fly down the outside and post an impressive length victory over Overpass (Vancouver). Belle O'Ballee (Star Witness) was another length and a quarter away in third.

Purchased by Wattle Bloodstock for $500,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the B2B Thoroughbreds draft, the colt is the first winner out of 2015 VRC Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (registered as Maybe Mahal Stakes) (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Scarlet Billows, who was herself purchased by Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock and Cable Bay Syndicate for $460,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling & Bloodstock Sale in 2017.

The colt’s third dam is Group 3 winner Smytzer’s Rivalry (Made Of Gold), while further back this is the same pedigree as Listed winner Top Dance (Brilliant Invader) - the dam of Dancing Sculptor (Rancho Ruler).

In 2019 Scarlet Billows produced a filly by Written Tycoon (Iglesia), before foaling filly by Arrowfield Stud’s Dundeel (High Chaparral) and she was covered by Darley’s Exceed And Excel (Danehill) last November.

Capitalist is the leading first-season in terms of winners, while he is sitting second behind barnmate Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) by earnings. Capitalist has ten lots catalogued at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale which gets underway on Tuesday.
