Capital Reign impresses on debut at Canberra
Newgate Farm's first season sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon) sired his ninth winner on Friday when the Gary Portelli-trained Capital Reign (2 g ex Elle Lou by Snitzel) scored an impressive victory on debut over 1000 metres at Canberra.
A two length winner of a recent Warwick Farm barrier trial, Capital Reign led early and on straightening he was asked to quicken, but showed greeness to hang over towards the standside. However, he pulled away in the closing stages to score an impressive two and a half length victory over three-year-old Kibosh (So You Think), with Hey Dugee (Delago Deluxe) another length back in third.
Bred by SF Bloodstock, Blake Sandblom and Winstar and bought for $30,000 by Elite Thoroughbreds from the draft of Newgate Farm at last year's Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Capital Reign is the first foal out of the Group 3 winning Snitzel (Redoute's Choice) mare Elle Lou.
His second dam is Listed placed Snipify (Snippets) while further back this is the family of Group 1 winner Srikandi (Dubawi).
Bought for $600,000 by B2B Thoroughbreds at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Elle Lou's I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) colt was passed in with a reserve of $350,000 at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and after missing to Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit) the following season she was covered by Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) last September.
Newgate Farm's Capitalist heads the leading first season sires table in Australia by winners with eight, three ahead of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller), Frosted (Tapit), Star Turn (Star Witness), Maurice (Screen Hero) and Sooboog (Snitzel) who have all sired five winners in Australia to date. He is second in the table by earnings, $200,000 in prize money behind his barnmate Extreme Choice.
