Cloudy lands Breeders’ Stakes at Morphettville and becomes latest star for Darley first-season shuttler
Darley first-season shuttler Frosted (Tapit) sired his first southern hemisphere-bred Group winner on Saturday courtesy of Cloudy’s (2 f ex Applegate by Exceed And Excel) victory in the SAJC Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday.
Last seen winning the Dequetteville Stakes (Listed, 1050m) on April 10, the James Cummings-trained filly beat Karacasu (Headwater) by a neck, while Isles Of Avalon (Toronado) was a further length and a half away in third.
Cloudy is one of three winners out of 2011 Ottawa Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Applegate (Exceed And Excel), who was purchased by Andy Williams Bloodstock for $60,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2020.
Godolphin spokesman Sean Keogh said Cloudy was again deserving of her victory on Saturday as the stable held a big opinion of her from the outset.
“On debut she faced some of the best colts we had around in Melbourne and we’ve seen what they’ve gone on and done,” Keogh said.
“We kept her in a restricted company to give her some confidence. She put her maiden away in good style and came over here to South Australia and put away a black type race.
“We felt like she went on from the run and James was very happy with the way she went into the race today.”
Applegate herself is half-sister to Group 3 winner Yulalona (Dubai Destination), while the filly’s third dam is Grade 1 winner Link River (Gone West).
In 2019 Applegate produced a colt by Ribchester (Iffraaj), before producing a filly by Impending (Lonhro) in 2020 and she was covered by Coolmore Stud-based sire So You Think (High Chaparral) last November.
Frosted has sired five first-crop southern hemisphere-bred winners from just 11 starters, including dual Listed winner and Group 1-placed Ingratiating, while he is represented by 34 global winners in total and has also sired two stakes winners in his native America; Grade 2 scorer Travel Column and Listed winner Cave Hill.
Given his almost instant success in Australia, Frosted has been subject to a significant fee hike and will stand the 2021 season for $44,000 (inc GST) at Northwood Park, having stood the previous term for $22,000 (inc GST).
