Zoustar (Northern Meteor) will stand for an increased fee of $154,000 (inc GST) in 2021 and he will stand alongside Widden Stud’s new stallion Anders (Not A Single Doubt), who will be offered to breeders at an introductory fee of $16,500 (inc GST).

Widden Stud reduced the fee of their headline stallion Zoustar in 2020 to $121,000 (inc GST) in response to the coronavirus pandemic, but the son of Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) will return to the career high fee he stood for in 2019.

Zoustar has enjoyed a brilliant year on the track, siring 13 stakes winners headed by Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Zoutori, while this success has translated to his results in the sales ring, with 110 of his yearlings selling for an aggregate of $29,336,505 at an average of $266,695.

“There have been alot of early bookings for him and there will be no doubt he will be fully booked and we are trying to keep his book at reasonable numbers with him shuttling, but every indication is that he will be very popular again this year,” Antony Thompson told Racing & Sports Bloodstock.

Zoustar will stand alongside his son Zousain will stand his second season for a fee for an unchanged fee of $19,800 (inc GST) having covered a book of 188 mares in 2020.

“Zousain was obviously very popular last year,” said Thompson. “He was very popular for a first season and handled it all well and I would imagine he will be in the same vein this year, as will some of our new stallions; Anders and Doubtland they are cut from a similar cloth and they will be popular standing at those prices.”

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Anders won twice as a two-year-old and made a good start to his three-year-old season with a dominant victory in the Rosebud Handicap (Listed, 1100m), in which he beat subsequent dual Group 1 winner Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon).

He backed that up with an equally impressive three and a quarter length victory in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on August 29, defeating Peltzer (So You Think) in a time of 1.02.67 with that victory earning him a Timeform rating of 119.

The son of Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) retired the winner of four of his 11 starts, which saw him earn $326,615 in career prize-money.

Bred by Arrowfield and purchased by his trainer and Aquis Farm for $670,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Arrowfield Stud draft, the colt is out of unraced War Emblem (Our Emblem) mare Madame Andree, making him a three-quarters brother to stakes-placed Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt Battleground.

His third dam is Appealing Story (Valid Appeal) - the dam of Grade 1 winner Exciting Story (Diablo) and Listed-winning trio Strong Memory (End Sweep), Sweeping Story (End Sweep) and Diablo’s Story (Diablo) - who in turn produced fellow Listed winner Open Story (Open Forum).

Further back this is the family of Listed scorers Red Claudia (Agnes Tachyon) and Colourful Days (Fuji Kiseki).

The 2018 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Written By (Written Tycoon) will return to the fee he stood for in his first season in 2019 of $24,750 (inc GST), up from $22,000 (inc GST) last year 2020, while fellow third season stallion Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) will stand for a reduced fee of $66,000 (inc GST), having stood last season for $77,000 (inc GST).

“The feedback on Written By’s foals has been very good,” said Thomspon. “We dropped his fee last year due to COVID and we have just brought back up to what it was the year before.”

It was announced earlier in the year that Widden Stud would take over the reins at Sun Stud and Thompson has relocated Nicconi (Bianconi) and Star Witness (Starcraft) from New South Wales to stand in Victoria for the 2021 breeding season.

Nicconi will stand his first season in Victoria for an unchanged fee of $27,500 (inc GST), while Star Witness will be offered at a slightly reduced figure of $16,500 (inc GST), having stood last season for $22,000 (inc GST).

As announced by Widden earlier this month, dual Group 1 winner Russian Camelot (Camelot) and Group 2 winner Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt) will stand their first season at stud for introductory fees of $22,000 (inc GST) and $16,500 (inc GST).

“We have a very strong line up of stallions in Victoria and the feedback has been fantastic,” said Thompson. “The early bookings have been positive and the visitors to the farm has been good and I think we have really hit the mark with our Victorian stallion line-up and the feedback has been wonderful.”
