Miss Hipstar leads home quinella for stallion in Dalrello Stakes

Miss Hipstar (2 f ex Single Style by Not A Single Doubt) could be set for Group 1 assignments when she showed her class in the Dalrello Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, leading home a quinella for the first-season sire Star Turn (Star Witness), while the victory also handed the Vinery Stud stallion his first at stakes level. 

The Kelly Schweida-trained two-year-old filly became the stallion’s first winner when she made a winning debut at Doomben on November 7, before following up that win with a second win at Ipswich. Miss Hipstar was sent for a spell after finishing ninth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in January and she resumed from that spell, with a brilliant half a length win over Stellar Magic, while Ashema (I Am Invincible) was another head away in third. 

Schweida is now eyeing a possible tilt in the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 12 and is confident she can cope with the step up in distance. 

“She has only had one jumpout since January, I put a bit of trust in her that she has got a bit of ticker,” Schweida said.

“The pleasing thing about this is Larry [Cassidy] has ridden a lot of good horses and when you talk to him about her, he starts to get excited.

“For sure I would love to run her in the JJ Atkins if she could run the distance, she’s a big girl.”

Purchased by her trainer for $150,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year, the filly is out of Listed-winning Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) mare Single Style, making her a half-sister to stakes-placed Still Single (More Than Ready), who is in turn a three-quarter-sister to Group 3 Doubtful Jack (Not A Single Doubt). 

The filly’s fourth dam is Regal Fantasy (Sir Tristram) and she produced Group 3 winner Honour Code (Marscay), while she is she grandam of Group 3 scorer Razor Blade (Blazing Sword), who in turn produced multiple Group 1 winner Flamberge (Exceed And Excel), Group 2 winner Sunburnt Lad (Scenic), Group 3 scorer Durendal (Medaglia D’Oro) as well as Listed winner Curtana (Exceed And Excel). 

Razor Blade is also the grandam of Group 2 winner Sword Of Light (New Approach) and Listed scorer Sword Of Justice (Medaglia d’Oro). 

In 2019 Single Style foaled a filly by former Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo) and she was purchased by Schweida for $425,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year. 

Last spring the mare produced a filly by Widden Stud-based sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and she was covered by Star Turn’s barnmate Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) in November. 

Star Turn has sired eight winners in total and his first-crop also includes stakes-placed trio Stellar Magic, Pegasi and Astrologer and he is sitting second behind Capitalist (Written Tycoon) in the race to be crowned champion first-season by number of winners. 

Star Turn will stand the 2021 season for an unchanged fee of $16,500 (inc GST).
