Newgate Farm's first season sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon) strengthened his stranglehold on the race to be crowned champion first-season sire in Australia as Socialist (2 f ex Baby Corn by Exceed And Excel) broke her maiden at the fourth attempt over 1200 metres at Canterbury on Wednesday, providing her sire with his 11th winner in Australia, while his total winners count includes one in New Zealand.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the two-year-old filly defeated Morioka (Maurice) by a length and a quarter, while Contentedly (More Than Ready) was another four and three-quarter lengths away in third.

Purchased for $130,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year from the Kitchwin Hills draft, the colt is the six winner from as many to race out of the Listed-winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare and she is set to be offered by Kitchwin Hills at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on May 27 in foal to Yulong's young stallion Brutal (O'Reilly).

She is catalogued as Lot 1156 and her progeny is headed by Group 1-placed Cornrow (Duporth).

Meanwhile, Kitchwin Hills will also offer Socialist's brother at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale and he is catalogued as Lot 271

Baby Corn herself is out of Group 3 winner Sweet Corn (Scenic) - the grandam of fellow Group 3 scorer Double You Tee (Written Tycoon).

A Spirit Of Boom half-brother to Socialist was purchased by First Light Racing, Paul Willetts and trainer Robert Heathcote for $60,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale earlier this year.

Capitalist has shown he works well with Danehill (Danzig) line mares, with eight of his 12 winners being out of sons or grandsons of Danehill, including his Group 1-winning colt Captivant, who is out of a daughter of Commands (Danehill), while Group 3 winner Kalashnikov is out of a daughter of Flying Spur (Danehill).

The son of Written Tycoon will stand the 2021 season for an increased fee of $99,000 (inc GST), having stood last season at a fee of $44,000 (inc GST) and he looks on track to be crowned champion first-season by earnings, while he is now one ahead of Star Turn (Star Witness) in terms of winners, with the Vinery Stud-based resident also siring a new winner on Wednesday.
