VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Johnny Get Angry (Tavistock) will be aimed at next season’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

Trainer Denis Pagan said the gelding is likely to start his campaign off in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and could possibly also run in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000) and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) en route to his shot at the Melbourne Cup.

"Probably the Makybe Diva, maybe the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup and hopefully he gets a run in the Melbourne Cup," Pagan said.

Johnny Get Angry has returned to his trainer’s Flemington stables this week as he builds towards his potential kick-off in the Makybe Diva Stakes on his home track on September 11.

"He looks super at the moment, he's only been in three or four days and has been on the treadmill for a couple of days and he'll start cantering from tomorrow," Pagan said of the rising four-year-old.

"He had six or seven weeks in and I tipped him out for another four weeks, so he's had three months off this year, so he's ready to go now and this is the start of his campaign for the spring."
