Five for Proisir
The Rich Hill Stud-based sire Proisir (Choisir) was handed his fifth stakes winner on Saturday when the Lucy Tanner-trained Belle Plaisir (4 m ex Eden by Zeditave) landed the Rangitikei Gold Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Awapuni. The four-year-old mare pulled clear to defeat Quiz Kid (Iffraaj) by a length and a quarter, while Hartley (Azamour) was the same distance back in third. Belle Plaisir joins Levante, Riodini, Aimee’s Jewel, Vitesse Bo and Belle Plaisir as the stallion’s other stakes winners and he will stand the 2021 season at a fee of NZ$12,500 (plus GST).

91 for Lonhro
Darley’s stalwart stallion Lonhro (Octagonal) chalked up his 91st stakes winner when the James Cummings-trained Varda (4 m ex Wild Queen by Loup Sauvage) won the Chief de Beers Handicap (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben on Saturday. The four-year-old mare has now six of her 14 starts and accrued $395,625 in career prize-money. The mare is out of Group 3 winner Wild Queen (Loup Sauvage) - who is herself a grandam of Varda’s multiple Group 1-winning three-quarter brother Kementari and he is himself a half-brother to Listed winner and Group 1-placed Telperion (Street Cry), who stands at Westbury Stud in New Zealand.

First Group winner for Bryannbo's Gift
The Robert Heathcote-trained Emerald Kingdom (6 g ex Horshoe by Commands) handed sire Bryannbo's Gift (Zabeel) with his first Group winner. The six-year-old gelding broke through at stakes level for the first time when he landed the Sunshine Coast Cup (Listed, 1400m) in January and he chalked up his first win at Group level when defeating Tofane (Ocean Park) by a length and a quarter. Bryannbo's Gift’s other stakes winner is Listed-placed Steel Frost.

Second stakes win for Romancer
New Zealand-bred Romancer (7 g Redwood - Romantically by Foreplay) landed a shock victory in the Straight Six Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday. The Grahame Begg-trained seven-year-old gelding had not been successful since his victory over 1600 metres at Flemington in July 2020, while this is the second stakes success for the gelding, having taken out the Mufhasa Stakes (Listed, 1300m) in 2016 when trained in New Zealand by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs. Romancer is one of eight stakes winners of Westbury Stud-based sire Redwood (High Chaparral) and they are headed by Group 1 scorer Rock On Wood.

Polly Grey continues winning form
Having landed the Gosford Gold Cup (Listed, 2100m) on her most recent start on May 8, the Chris Waller-trained Polly Grey (6 m Azamour - Allanah by Zenno Rob Roy) continued her purple patch of form when she landed the Lord Mayor's Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday, another timely update before she is offered at next week’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast on May 25. The six is consigned by Oxford Thoroughbreds and catalogued as Lot 548. https://catalogue.magicmillions.com.au/lot/21GWM/548 A winner of the Epona Stakes (Gr 3, 1900m) in March 2021, the Polly Grey’s first stakes win came when she landed the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) when trained in New Zealand by Kylie Fawcett.

Nine for Sooboog
The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexio-trained Bitcoin Baby (2 f ex Hard To Find by Elusive Quality) chalked up her first win on debut over 900 metres at Newcastle on Saturday and in the process became first-crop winner number nine for the Kitchwin Hills-based first-season sire Sooboog (Snitzel). The two-year-old was purchased by C Holt for $65,000 during the Highway session of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale last year. Sooboog’s first-crop includes stakes-placed gelding Birdsville and the stallion will stand the 2021 season for a fee of $13,200.
