Well-bred Setanta victorious in Queensland Day Stakes for Tony Gollan

Well-bred colt Setanta (3 c ex Legally Bay) won Saturday's Queensland Day Stakes (Listed, 1200m) to become the 175th stakes winner for Coolmore Australia’s Fastnet Rock (Danehill). 

Starting at odds of 30-1, the Tony Gollan-trained colt got up in the final stride to beat more fancied stablemate Mass Destruction (Spirit Of Boom) by a nose. Tramonto (Wandjina) was the same distance back in thor. 

Bought for $2.3 million by Aquis Farm at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Segenhoe Stud, Setanta is the last foal and seventh winner out of Group 3 winner Legally Bay (Snippets). She has produced two other stakes winners in dual Group 1 winner and Coolmore Australia-based sire Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) and Group 2 winner Jolie Bay (Fastnet Rock) who herself produced the stakes placegetter God Of Thunder (More Than Ready). 

Raced by a syndicate that includes Aquis Farm and his breeder Chris Barham as well as Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien Setanta’s overall record now stands at three wins and three placings from 10 starts with prize money topping $185,000.

Merchant Navy had his first yearlings selling this year for up to $500,000 while Setanta is the 14th Australian stakes-winner this season for champion sire Fastnet Rock who currently heads the stakes winners table in Australia.

Fastnet Rock will stand at a fee of $165,000 (inc GST) this spring.
