Darley first season sire Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) sired his first stakes winner and 7th winner when Danger Strykes (2 f ex She Is Stryking by Stryker) took at the Castletown Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Wanganui on Saturday.

Danger Strykes enjoyed the run of the race in fourth position one out one back. She travelled smoothly into the race taking the home turn four wide. She responded well to riding wearing down the leaders to hit the front inside the final 200 metres and had enough in reserve to hold off Ima Roca Bee (El Roca) to score with her ears pricked by a long neck.

Danger Strykes, who was only having her second start, was passed in for NZ$50,000 at the NZB Karaka Book 1 yearling sale. She is the second foal out of the stakes placed mare She Is Stryking, while her third dam is the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Fashion Victim (Rory’s Jester).

In Australia later in the day Astern sired his 8th winner when Somewatt Fabulous won on debut at Morphettville. Somewatt Fabulous was a $45,000 purchase by her trainers Richard & Chantelle Jolly at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Astern now moves to fourth on the leading first season sires of Australia table by winners which is headed by Capitalist (Written Tycoon) on 16, followed by Star Turn (Star Witness) with 12 and Sooboog (Snitzel) on nine.

Castletown Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

The winner of this Listed juvenile event was the fresh up visiting filly Danger Strikes with that raced fourth the outer and then strode up second at the 150m and led at the 120m. She held on at the line by a neck in 1:13.95 on the Slow8 rated track in what was her first win and it came at her second ever outing and was of course at Blacktype. The winners and where they came from turning for home were second (seven-off the fence and a length from the leader), led (six-off the fence and a length from the leader), second (three-off the fence and a neck from the leader), fourth (five-off the fence and length and a half from the leader), sixth (six-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), led (six-off the fence and half a length from the leader) and second (eight-off the fence and a neck from the leader). The filly had run third on debut on decent footing and had trialled well prior and since too. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the over $8 she paid in what was not a strong field on paper at all. Second home at $34 was the also visiting filly Ima Roca Bee that steamed home from third last on settling and she got very close at the line. She was also ridden by the apprentice rider Erin Leighton. Third home was Bellacontte that ran on strongly from last the outer and the filly did come the widest the run home too. She had also run third on debut and beforehand had won back to back trials. Fourth home beaten two lengths was yet another filly in Miss Ipenema that was at $19 and after working wide early she went up second the outer and actually led at the 250m before succumbing 130m later. She had won a race during her first preparation and was ridden by the apprentice rider Temyia Tairoa. Fifth home was the Australian bred Platinum Machine that raced sixth in a gap and came wide on the home turn before running on okay. Sixth home was Fermanagh that started third favourite and raced fifth the inner but never ran on the run home and the filly was beaten almost four and three-quarters of a length. The rest got beaten five and a half lengths and up to over thirteen and a half lengths plus the first and second favourites Iffshecan (second favourite) and Taiosearch (the only male in the field) ran disappointingly to finish seventh and eighth. This was not a very strong Blacktype juvenile event at all with just two race winners involved and also four of this ten-horse field were ridden by apprentice riders. The breeding of many of these was okay but the maturity looked to be lacking for most of them and they will hopefully return as stronger 3yo's.
