Spendthrift Farm’s Mac ‘N’ Cheese wins Oaklands Plate.

The Spendthrift Farm-raced Mac 'N' Cheese (2 f ex Bonnie Mac by Thorn Park) put up an impressive performance in when breaking her maiden in Saturday's Oaklands Plate (Listed, 1400m) at Morphettville and in doing so became the 70th stakes winner for the late Widden sire Sebring (More Than Ready). 

From the back of the field, Mac 'N' Cheese went wide round the home turn, ran on well in the straight and took the lead with 100 metres left to run and then pulled away from Tonneofgrit (Winning Rupert) to score by two lengths. Gosden (Not A Single Doubt) was another four and a half lengths back in third. 

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained filly was having her third career start, finishing second on debut at Bendigo over 1100 metres on May 16 before following that up with another second at Sandown over 1400 metres on June 2. 

​​"She is hairy to watch. I was really disappointed early as we have done a lot of work on her at the barriers, McEvoy said.

"She has been jumping out well at home. I gave her a trial at Gawler, and she jumped out well. I was really confident she would jump out today, and sure enough, she blew the start.

"It was a hard watch for me from then on, but she clearly showed her talent

"The leader had a cosy run up the front, and she did all the work. I have to say that Barend summed it up. He went early, came around them and was able to run down the leader.

"I'm sure she can run a mile plus, but we have to get her manners better. I will talk to the Spendthrift guys, but I would like to see her later in the spring. We have some work to do. You can't give away a start, but she is a great talent.

"She is a good quality filly, and there is more to come."

Bred by Nick Vass, Mac 'N' Cheese was bought for $300,000 by Spendthrift Australia from the draft of Newgate Farm at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year. 

She is the penultimate foal out of Listed winning Thorn Park (Spinning World) mare Bonnie Mac who has now produced three winners from as many foals to race headed by Vinery Stud's Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning sire Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) and the Peter Moody-trained Group Three winner Oxley Road (Exceed And Excel). 

Bonnie Mac's Capitalist (Written Tycoon) colt made $1,050,000 when sold to Hickman Racing at this year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
