Star Turn, Tarzino, Whittington, Helmet, Makfi, Fighting Sun, Twice Over & Into Mischief record new stakes winners

Two for Star Turn 
The Gerry Harvey-raced Me Me Lagarde (3 f ex Roedean by Flying Spur) became the second stakes winner for Star Turn (Star Witness) when she won Saturday's Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. The filly, who failed to make her reserve of $75,000 when offered by Baramul Stud during Book 2 of last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale scored a decisive one and three quarter length victory over Far Too Easy (All Too Hard). 

Miss Hipster was the first stakes winner by the Vinery Stud-based stallion whose third crop will sell at the yearling sales next year. In addition to his two stakes winners, Star Witness has also produced six stakes placegetters in Startantes, Stellar Magic, Astrologer, La Bella Beals, Max Fire and Pegasi. 

 

First for Tarzino 
Gypsy Goddess (3 f ex Invisible Coin by Redoute's Choice) remained unbeaten when she took out Saturday's Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) at Eagle Farm and in doings became the first stakes winner for Tarzino (Tavistock). The David Vandyke-trained mare pulled clear to score by almost four lengths from Balmaurice (Maurice) and is now unbeaten in four career starts. Gypsy Goddess was passed in with a reserve of NZ$20,000 when she was offered at the 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Book 2 sale.

Gypsy Goddess is out of the unraced Redoute's Choice (Danehill) mare Invisible Coin and her Belardo (Lope De Vega) half-brother is catalogued as Lot 869 in Book 2 of Karaka 2022. 

Tarzino has two crops of racing age and he has produced four winners to date including his Group Two placed son Jungle Magnate. 

 

First for Whittington 
Stampe (5 g ex Envelope by Monashee Mountain) became the first stakes winner for Whittington (Tale Of The Cat) when he won Saturday's Lough Neagh Stakes (Listed,1400m) at Eagle Farm. 

Whittington is based at Grandview Stud in Queensland where his 2021 fee was advertised at $3,300 (inc GST). 

 

14 for Helmet 
Stepping up into stakes company for the first time, Beret (5 m ex Irish Hut by Quest For Fame) became the 14th stakes winner for Helmet when she won Saturday's Belhus Stables - Starstruck (Listed, 1600m) at Ascot. The Adam Durant-trained mare beat Playing Marika (Playing God) by three quarters of a length and she has now won six of her 25 career starts and placed in another 13.

Helmet's stakes winners are headed by his multiple Group One winning son Thunder Snow and the previously Darley-based son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) now stands at Gestut Fahrhof in Germany. 

 

42 for Makfi 
Former Westbury Stud shuttler Makfi (Dubawi) sired his 42nd stakes winner when Marroni (5g ex Bacio Del Vinto by Encosta De Lago) won the Manawatu Cup (Gr 3, 2250m). The gelding scored by a nose from Zee Falls (Sacred Falls), recording his sixth victory in 20 career starts.

Makfi's stakes winners include five Group One winners in Bonneval, Make Believe, Sofia. Rosa, Mark Mark and Mkfancy and having previously shuttled from Europe to Westbury Stud, he was sold to Japan in 2016.

 

Three for Fighting Sun 
The late Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor) sired his third stakes winner when his Australian-bred daughter Celavi (5 m ex In Harmony by Exceed And Excel) won the Merlion Trophy (Listed, 1200m) at Karnji. Celavi has been through the sales ring twice; selling to Moorillah Pastoral for $50,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale before being bought for $100,000 by Wattle Bloodstock at the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO in Training Sale later that year. On Sunday, the Michael Clements-trained mare beat Starlight (Headwater) bu a length and a quarter and has now won seven of her 12 career starts. Fighting Sun's other stakes winners are Newhart and fellow Singapore stakes winner Chess Star. 

Fighting Sun, who stood at Sun Stud for six seasons, died in June last year. 

 

Three for Twice Over
In winning Saturday's Cape Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Kenilworth, Double Superlative (3 c ex Come Fly With Me by Jet Master) became the third Grade One winner and seventh stakes winner overall for the Freeman Stallions-based Twice Over (Observatory). 

Double Superlative beat Pomp And Power (Vercingetorix) by a length and a quarter, with the same distance back to Cosmic Highway (Gimmethegreenlight) in third. 

Twice Over's other Grade One winners are Do It Again and Sand And Sea. 

 

105 for Into Mischief
Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) notched up stakes winner number 105 when Centre Aisle (4 f ex Specification by Empire Maker) won the Sugar Swirl Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The OXO Equine-owned filly beat favourite Frank's Rockette - who is also by Into Mischief - by a length. 

Connections have further stakes aims for Centre Aisle, who was bought for US$1.5 million by Larry Best at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton The Gulfstream Sale. 

Into Mischief is the leading sire again in the US this year, having taken the title in 2019 and 2020, with his progeny earnings totalling just under US$24 million, US$8 million ahead of Ghostzapper (Awesome Again) who sits second.
