Maurice sires his first Group 1 winner and Tarzino records his first

New Group 1 winners
Three for Maurice

Arrowfield Stud's shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero) recorded his second Australian-bred Group 1 winner – third overall - when the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Mazu (3 g ex Chatelaine by Flying Spur) won the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) at Eagle Farm, prevailing by a nose from Paulele (Dawn Approach). Mazu was a $180,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale buy by Triple Crown Syndications from the draft of Parsons Creek Pastoral and the gelding has now won his last six starts taking his record to seven wins and one placing in 11 starts. Maurice's six stakes winners are headed by three-time Group 1 winner Hitotsu and Japanese Grade 1 winner Pixie Knight, while he has also sired the Grade 2 winning pair Jack d'Or and Shigeru Pink Ruby. He will stand a sixth season in Australia this year for a fee of $82,500 (inc GST), up from $44,000 last year when he covered 156 mares.

 

First for Tarzino
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Jungle Magnate (3 g ex The Love Of Money by Casino Prince) won Saturday's Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville, providing Tarzino (Tavistock) with his first Group 1 winner. A Group 3 winner last start, Jungle Magnate, who was bought for NZ$75,000 by Mick Price Racing & Breeding at Karaka Book 1 in 2020, beat Yaphet (Blackfriars) by one and three quarter lengths, with Detonator Jack (Jakkalberry) third. The Westbury Stud-based Tarzino has two crops of racing age and has sired one other stakes winner to date, his Group 3 winning and Group 1 placed daughter Gypsy Goddess. His 2022 fee has been set at NZ$15,000 (plus GST).

 

New stakes winners
Seven for Awtaad

Irish-bred colt Diamil (4 c ex Diylawa by Mastercraftsman) handed Awtaad (Cape Cross) his seventh stakes winner when he won Saturday's Listed Members' Handicap (1600m) at Eagle Farm. Under Jamie Kah, the John O'Shea-trained entire defeated fellow Irish-bred Skandarabad (Dr Fong) by three quarters of a length. Awtaad, who has three crops of racing age, stands at Shadwell's Derrinstown Stud in Ireland where his 2022 fee was advertised at €5,000.

 

17 for Brazen Beau
Saturday's Listed Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone was won by Zapateo (3 f ex Jerezana by Lonhro) who in winning became the 17th stakes winner for her Darley-based sire Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible). The James Cummings-trained filly, who was second in the Group 3 P J Bell Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last start, beat A Very Fine Red (Deep Field) by a length. Brazen Beau's stakes winners are headed by his Group 1 winning son On The Bubbles and he covered a book of 99 mares last year.

 

47 for Camelot
Coolmore Stud's Camelot (Montjeu) notched up his 47th stakes winner when his Irish-bred son Point Nepean (4 h ex Sea Goddess by Galileo) won the Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m) at Flemington on Saturday. Trained by Robert Hickmott, Point Nepean was having his fifth start in Australia and has now won his last three starts, on Saturday beating fellow European-bred Luncies (Iffraaj) by three quarters of a length.

 

78 for I Am Invincible
In Secret (3 f ex Eloping by Choisir) remained unbeaten in two career starts when she won Saturday's Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) at Scone, becoming the 78th stakes winner for her Yarraman Park-based sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit). In Secret was a $900,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by Godolphin Australia from the draft of Segenhoe Stud and she is one of 39 juvenile stakes winners for her sire.

 

89 for Iffraaj
Stepping into stakes company for the first time, Francesca (4 m ex Matagouri by High Chaparral) won Saturday's Group 3 Rotorua Stakes (1400m) at Arawa Park, providing former Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic) with his 89th stakes winner. The Andrew Forsman-trained mare scored a two and a quarter length victory over Sassy Merlot, taking her record to five wins and two placings in nine starts. Iffraaj is now based at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and his sire sons include Coolmore Australia shuttler Wootton Bassett.

 

First for Pariah
In breaking his maiden in the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m) at Eagle Farm, Swiss Exile (2 c ex Swiss Francs by Swiss Ace) provided Arrowfield Stud's first season sire Pariah (Redoute's Choice) with his first stakes winner and his third winner overall. Stakes placed twice previously, the Annabel Neasham-trained Swiss Exile scored a half length victory over Exo Lady (Exosphere). Swiss Exile was a $95,000 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale purchase by his trainer and Brian McGuire from the draft of Baramul Stud. Pariah is currently seventh in the leading first season sires table in Australia by earnings.

 


76 for Sebring
Widden Stud's late sire Sebring (More Than Ready) recorded his 76th stakes winner when the Bjorn Baker-trained Bring The Ransom (5 m ex Gold Epona by Stratum) won the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone. The mare scored by a length from Wandabaa (Wandjina). Sebring, who was retired to stud in 2009, died in February 2019 and his stakes winners include eight Group 1 winners. 

 

28 for Zoustar
Widden Stud's Zoustar (Northern Meteor) recorded his 28th stakes winner when Twin Stars (2 c ex Pearl Star by Star Witness) won the Group 3 South Australian Sires' Produce (1400m) at Morphettville. The Tony and Calvin-trained Twin Stars finished second two weeks ago in the Group 3 Breeders' Stakes (1200m) but went one better on Saturday when he beat Hope At Hand (Impending) by a neck. Miss Dunsford (Dissident) was the same distance back in third. Twin Stars was bought by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock for $225,000 at last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when offered by KBL Thoroughbreds.
