With two past winners in the race, Tuesday's $8.4 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup naturally contains horses by sires who have previously provided the winner of the 3200-metre Group 1.

Gold Trip last year made Outstrip, a son of former star Aussie sprinter Exceed And Excel, an unlikely Melbourne Cup-winning sire, while Vow And Declare won it for Declaration Of War in 2019.

Teofilo is the only other stallion to have provided the winner of the race who is represented in this year's edition.

The Darley stallion has Without A Fight, who last month provided Teofilo with his first win in the Caulfield Cup.

The first son of Teofilo to win the Melbourne Cup was Cross Counter in 2018, while he won it again two years later with Twilight Payment.

Teofilo is a son of the legendary Galileo, whose best Melbourne Cup results are second placings with Purple Moon (2007), Johannes Vermeer (2017) and Tiger Moth (2020), and he is the only stallion with multiple runners in this year's race.

Epsom Derby winner Serpentine, last-start Bendigo Cup winner Interpretation, Okita Soushi – who is out of Thousand Guineas winner Amicus – and Group 1 Irish Oaks winner Magical Lagoon are those by Galileo engaged this year.

Galileo is also the grandsire of raging Melbourne Cup favourite Vauban, who is a son of Galiway, whose best-performed product to date is British Champions Stakes winner Sealiway.

Vauban will become just the second Australian runner for the 11-year-old stallion, whose only other to race Down Under is Gregolimo, who is now trained by Mike Moroney and has had two starts this campaign including a last-start third placing in the Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m).
