Juddmonte Farms stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) sired his 18th stakes winner on Monday as his son Fearless King (3 c ex Astrelle by Makfi) prevailed in a tight finish to win the Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) (Gr 2, 1600m) in Cologne.

Last seen running third behind Rubaiyat (Areion) in the Dr Busch-Memorial (Gr 3, 1600m), the colt just found enough to reverse the form with Rubaiyat, beating him by head, while Santurin (Sommerabend) was another length and three quarters further back in the third.

Purchased by Tina Rau Bloodstock / RTC GmbH for 175,000gns from the draft of Adrian O'Brien's Hazelwood Bloodstock at Book 2 of the 2018 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

The colt is from the second crop foaled at Adrian and Philippa O'Brien's Hazelwood Bloodstock in Newmarket. The operation, that was founded in 2016, enjoyed their biggest success in the sales ring last year when Godolphin bought the Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) colt out of Alina (Galileo) for 3.6 million guineas. Bred by Sun Kingdom and foaled and raised at Hazelwood Bloodstock, he was the most expensive yearling colt sold in 2019 and Fearless King becomes the first Classic winner for the operation.

"We were really excited with Fearless King's victory today in the German 2000 Guineas," Adrian O'Brien told Racing & Sports Bloodstock.

"He is the first foal from the mare and what a great start for her. She has a very good Frankel filly that will be retained to race and a very attractive Cracksman colt at foot. She's in foal to Calyx, who is obviously a son of Kingman.

"We are delighted for Tina Rau and connections who purchased him at Tattersalls Book 2 as a yearling."

Fearless King is out two time-winning and Group 3-placed Makfi (Dubawi) mare Astrelle.

Raced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa, Astrelle is herself is a half-sister to Italian Group 2 winner Porsenna (Dylan Thomas) and Basileus (Dream Ahead) - who won at Listed level in Italy. She also counts Australian Group 3-placed Our Candidate (Camelot) among her other half siblings.

The colt's third dam is Group 2 winner Sopran Mariduff (Persian Bold), who produced Listed scorer Statue (Red Ransom) - the grandam of Brazilian Grade 1 winner Tweet (Midshipman).

Kingman's progeny is headed by Group 1 winner Perisan King, who won last year's Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m), and the stallion will be represented in Australia in 2020 by his Group 2-winning son Calyx, who will shuttle to Coolmore's Hunter Valley base where he will stand for a fee of $17,600 (inc GST).

Kingman stood at Banstead Manor in Newmarket for a fee of £150,000 in 2020.
