First winner for Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo
Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) sired his first winner when Golden Melody (2 f ex Chanter by Lomitas) impressed on debut in the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes (6f) at Haydock on Sunday.
Trained in Newmarket by William Haggas, Golden Melody beat Star Of Emaraaty (Pride Of Dubai) by two and a quarter lenghts with another half length back to Scarlet Bear (Kodi Bear) in third.
Golden Melody was sold for 52,000gns to her trainer at last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1. She becomes the sixth winner for her unraced dam Chanter (Lomitas) who is herself out of the Group 3-placed mare Grace Note (Top Ville), the dam of eight winners headed by the Group 1 winner Belmez (El Gran Senor). Grace Note is also the grandam of Arlington Million Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winner Debussy (Diesis) and further back this is the family of Japanese Grade 1 winner Red Desire (Manhattan Cafe).
Golden Melody's sister was sold for just €6,000 at last year's Goffs Ireland November Foal Sale.
Belardo, who won the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at two and then added the Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at four to his record, will stand for NZ$10,000 (plus GST) this season at Haunui Farm. He is the only son of former Patinack Farm shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal) at stud in Australasia.
