Telemon Thoroughbreds-based sire Sidestep (Exceed And Excel) was provided with his third stakes winner on Friday as his son Step By Step (3 c ex Anavera by Acatenango) took out the Derby Du Languedoc (Listed, 2400m) at Toulouse.

Sent off the 4 / 5 favourite, the colt pulled clear at the business end of the 2400 metre contest to defeat Mensen Ernst (Intello) by two and a half lengths with another length and three quarters of a length back to Euclidia (Maxios) in third.

Step By Step was purchased by the Broadhurst Agency for €19,000 at the Arqana Autumn Mixed Sale in 2018, before being sold for €26,000 at the Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale the following year.

The colt is the ninth foal out of three-time winning mare Anavera (Acatenango) and she has produced two other winners.

Anavera is out of Listed winner Avocette (Kings Lake), making her a half-sister to Listed winner Anatola (Tiger Hill) who is herself the dam of 2016 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin (Monsun) and Group 2 winner Atempo (Monsun).

Avocette is also the dam of Group 1 winner Amarette (Monsun), who in turn produced Group 3 winner Amazona (Dubawi) and Assisi (Galileo), with the latter being the dam of French Group 1 winner Alson (Areion) and Ancient Spirit (Invincible Spirit) - who raced in Australia as Advance Yulong and he was last seen taking out the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Navan on Wednesday.

Sidestep’s progeny is headed by 2019 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Kiamichi, while he counts French Listed winner Real Appeal as his other stakes winner.

The son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) shuttled to Haras Du Logis for three seasons, where he stood for €4,000 every season, and the stallion now stands at Telemon Thoroughbreds in Queensland for a reduced fee of $16,500 (inc GST) having stood the 2019 season for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).
