Last seen winning the Newmarket Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) on June 6, the John Gosden-trained Mishriff (3 c ex Contradict by Raven's Pass) showed he had no issues with the step up in class as he came home strongest in the Prix Du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) at Chantilly on Sunday and in the process became Make Believe’s (Makfi) first Group 1 winner.

The three-year-old colt, who was providing Gosden with his first win in the Classic, showed a potent turn of foot inside the final 100 metres to beat The Summit (Wootton Bassett) by a length and three quarters, while last start Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Victor Ludorum (Shamardal), who had no luck in running, was another neck further away in third.

"To put the race away in two strides like that, he must be a real star," said winning jockey Ioritz Mendizabal, who was allowed to keep the race after a stewards' inquiry.

"That's a second Jockey Club after Vision D'Etat in 2008 and I must thank Prince Faisal and John Gosden for placing their trust in me. That is a big plus for a jockey and when I read Mr Gosden's comments this morning that made me more confident.

"I was told and I saw on the videos of his races that he carries his head quite low and I just needed to gather him together halfway up the home straight. But when he picked up, he had it won in two strides."

Mishriff is out of winning Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) mare Contradict, making him a half-brother to Listed winner Orbaan (Invincible Spirit) and stakes-placed Momkin (Bated Breath).

Contradict herself is out of Group 3 winner Acts Of Grace (Bahri), who is in turn out of Group 1 winner Rafha (Kris).

Rafha is famed for producing Group 1 and top-class stallion Invincible Spirit (Green Desert), while she is also the dam of Group 3 winner Sadian (Shirley Heights) and Listed scorer Massarra (Danehill), who in turn produced Group 1 winner Nayarra (Cape Cross), Group 2 winner Gustav Klimt (Galileo), Group 3 scorer Wonderfully (Galileo) and Listed winning-pair Wonderfully (Galileo) and Blissful (Galileo).

Make Believe’s other stakes winners are Rose Of Kildare, Ocean Fantasy and Tammani and he stood for a fee of €12,000 at Ballylinch Stud in 2020. Winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains in 2015 the son of Makfi (Dubawi) was trained by Andre Fabre for Prince Faisal who races Mishriff.
