Colt hands Sea The Stars his 65th stakes winner
Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) chalked up his 65th stakes winner on Thursday courtesy of Al Aasy’s (3 c ex Kitcara by Shamardal) victory in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5f) at Newmarket.
Trained by William Haggas, the colt disappointed on his seasonal debut when he finished fifth Newmarket Stakes (Listed, 1m2f), which he then made amends for with an impressive victory in the Bradfield Combust Novice Stakes (1m2f) on June 18.
The colt clearly appreciated the step up in trip gliding home to beat the Aidan O’Brien-trained Dawn Rising (Galileo) by a length and three quarters with the same distance back to Al Dabaran (Dubawi) in third.
Bred by Sunderland Holdings and purchased by Shadwell for 300,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale from the Mount Coote Stud draft, the colt is out of winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Kitcara.
Kitcara herself is out of Listed-winner Kitkat (Monsun), making him a half-brother to ATC Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) winner Kapour (Toylsome).
Further afield this is the family of Group 1 winner Konigstiger (Tiger Hill) and Group 3-winning pair Kalla (Monsun) and Karavel (Monsun), with the latter the dam of Listed scorer Kerosin (Tertullian).
The colt’s fourth dam is Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner Gull Nook (Mill Reef), the dam of Group 1 winner and successful sire Pentire (Be My Guest) and Group 3 winner Spring (Sadler’s Wells).
Sea The Stars - whose progeny is headed by 13 Group 1 winners including this season’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Fifty Stars - stood at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud for a fee of €150,000 this year.
