Eagles By Day (4 c ex Missunited by Golan) made a winning debut for his new trainer David O’Meara when he landed the Silver Cup Stakes (Gr 3, 1m6f) at York on Saturday and in the process handed Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) with his 66th stakes winner.

Last seen finishing last of nine runners in the Hardwicke Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at Royal Ascot for former trainer Michael Bell, Eagles By Day got the better of the Mark Johnston-trained Communique (Casamento), beating him by half a length with another three lengths back to Universal Order (Universal) in third.

“We haven’t had him long, but he’s always been held in high regard and wasn’t far behind Japan at Royal Ascot last year,” said O’Meara.

“He showed a lot of class today. He’ll stay as far as you like and could be a proper Cup horse. We might run in the Lonsdale Cup or the Ebor next.”

The four-year-old colt was purchased by Joe Foley for 125,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale from the Whispering Grass Stud draft and the step up in trip in the Group 3 caused the colt no issues which was no surprise with him being out of Lillie Langtry Stakes (Gr 3, 1m6f) winner Missunited (Golan).

The colt’s third dam produced Group 3 winner Hoyer (Rarity) and Listed winner Sighisac (Polish Patriot).

Further back this is the same family Group 3-winning pair Court Chad (St Chad) and King’s Ride (Rarity). Meanwhile, Grade 1 winner Luge (Lyphard's Special) and Grade 3 winner Brave Caroline (Elusive Quality) also feature on the page.

Sea The Stars - whose progeny is headed by 13 Group 1 winners including this season’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Fifty Stars - stood at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud for a fee of €150,000 this year.
