Regally bred Cabaletta (3 f ex Allegretto by Galileo) put in a brave performance to get up in the shadow of the winning post to win the Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) at Newbury on Saturday and in so doing became stakes winner number 69 for former shuttler Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer).

As the field entered the final stages the William Haggas-trained Lady G (Golden Horn) looked to have the race at her mercy, but Roger Varian-trained Cabaletta was eating up the ground with every stride, heading the daughter of Golden Horn (Cape Cross) inside the final few metres, eventually beating her by half a length. Makawee (Farhh) finished another two and half lengths away in third.

“We were a bit disappointed at Haydock last time,” said Varian. “It was a very big ask going into a Group 2 on just her third start.

“We thought she would handle the bottomless ground there, but she didn’t go on that heavy ground. It is great to see her bounce back today.”

“She is a nice filly, make no mistake about that, and her best days are still ahead of her. The Lillie Langtry (at Goodwood) is two weeks away and provided we are happy with her that will be a good option.”

Bred and raced by Cheveley Park Stud, the filly is out of Prix Royal Oak (Gr 1, 3100m) winner Allegretto (Galileo), whose three other foals to race have also been winners.

Allegretto herself is out of Group 3 winner Alleluia (Caerleon), who is herself a half-sister to Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) winner Last Second (Alzao) - the dam of dual elite level winner Aussie Rules (Danehill) and Listed scorer Approach (Darshaan).

Approach herself proved herself a high-class producer being the dam of dual Group 1 winner Coronet (Dubawi) and Group 2 winner Midas Touch (Galileo), while she is also the grandam of Cocked Hat Stakes (Listed, 1m3f) winners Private Secretary (Kingman) and Michelangelo (Galileo), who was also placed at Group 1 level.

Alleluia is also a half-sister to Group 3 winner Alouette (Darshaan) - the dam of German Group 1 winner Albanova (Alzao), who in turn produced Group 3 winner Algometer (Archipenko) and Listed-winning duo All At Sea (Sea The Stars) and Alwilda (Hernando). Meanwhile, Alleluia also counts dual Newmarket Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) winner Alborada (Alzao) - the dam of four winners including ATC Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) my Nordic Hero (Archipenko) - among her half-siblings.

The Mastercraftsman / Galileo cross has produced two stakes winners; Festival Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Luvaluva and Listed winner Blue Gardenia.

The son of Danehill Dancer (Danehill) previously shuttled to Windsor Park and he now stands exclusively at Coolmore Stud where his fee in 2020 was advertised as €25,000.
