Filly becomes Camelot’s fifth Group 1 winner
Trainer Ger Lyons and jockey Colin Keane snared their second Classic of the season as Even So (3 f ex Breeze Hill by Danehill) produced a brave performance to win the Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) at the Curragh on Saturday and in the process became Coolmore Stud-based Camelot (Montjeu) with his fifth Group 1 winner.
Last seen winning the Oaks Trial (Listed, 1m2f), the Mrs John Magnier and Mrs Paul Shanahan-raced filly clearly thrived being stepped up to 1m4f, flying home to beat Cayenne Pepper (Australia) by two lengths, while Passion (Galileo) ran on well to finish third.
Lyons and Keane had tasted Classic success earlier in the season when Siskin (First Defence) landed the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and he delighted with the filly’s performance.
Even So is out of the winning Danehill (Danzig) mare Breeze Hill who won over 2100 metres in New Zealand having been bought by Paul Moroney Bloodstock for 150,000gns at the 2003 Tattersalls December Mare Sale. BBA Ireland then bought the mare for $100,000 at the 2012 Inglis Sydney Easter Broodmare Sale and she has produced seven winners from ten foals to race with Even So becoming her first stakes winner.
The filly’s second dam is the unraced mare Rose Of Jericho (Alleged) who produced six winners headed by the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner and sire Dr Devious (Ahonoora) and stakes winning trio Royal Court (Sadler’s Wells), Archway (Thatching) and Shinko King (Fairy King).
This is also the family of the dual Group 1 winner Dancing Rain (Danehill Dancer), Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner Maybe (Galileo) who in turn produced dual Group 1 winner and now Coolmore Stud shuttler Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) as well as Emirates Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock).
Camelot stood in Australia for just one season in 2014 when he covered 104 mares and the filly joins the likes of last year’s Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Latrobe and the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Russian Camelot as the stallion’s other top-flight winners.
The son of Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) stood at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a fee of €40,000 in 2020.
