Gelding lands City Walls Stakes at York
Progressive gelding Moss Gill (4 g ex Sharaarah by Oasis Dream) chalked up his first win at stakes level and in the process handed former shuttler No Nay Never (Scatt Daddy) with his 24th stakes winner as he came out on top of a blanket finish in the City Walls Stakes (Listed, 5f) at York on Saturday.
Last seen finishing sixth in the Palace House Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Newmarket on June 6, the James Bethall-trained gelding flew home to beat Al Raya (Siyouni) by a short-head with another neck back to Que Amoro (Es Que Love) in third.
“We’ve always thought a bit of him and I’m delighted he pulled it off today,” said Bethall’s son and assistant Ed.
“We were a little disappointed at Newmarket, but he didn’t come down the hill well. He obviously likes it here.
“Whether he’s back for the Nunthorpe is a good question – I’d probably prefer to take him through the grades, but you never say never.”
He added: “We’re over the moon as we’ve had a frustrating run of seconds and this horse means a lot to us as we’ve got his half-brother, Ulshaw Bridge.
“Danny [Tudhope] said he’s got one burst and if he could ride it again he’d have held on to him a bit longer.”
The gelding is one of three winners out of winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Sharaarah, who is herself a daughter of Dick Poole Stakes (Listed, 6f) winner Nidhaal (Observatory), making her a half-sister to Group 2-placed Burwaaz (Exceed And Excel).
No Nay Never shuttled to Coolmore Stud’s New South Wales base for four seasons, but will not return in 2020. The stallion is represented by 3 winners in Australasia, headed by New Zealand Group 3 winner Need I Say More.
The son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) stands exclusively at Coolmore’s Irish base where his fee for 2020 was €175,000.
A first Listed win since 2007 for trainer @JamesBethellRac as Moss Gill gamely lands the £27,000 Listed John Smith's City Walls Stakes at @yorkracecourse under Danny Tudhope
