The Richard Hannon-trained Ventura Tormenta (2 c ex Midnight Oasis by Oasis Dream) turned the tables on The Lir Jet (Prince Of Lir) when he landed the Prix Robert Papin (Gr 2, 1200m) at Chantilly on Sunday and in so doing became Acclamation’s (Royal Applause) 54th stakes winner.

The two-year-old colt finished sixth behind The Lir Jet in the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot, before breaking his maiden on his next start at Yarmouth and was most recently seen running fifth in the Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f).

The colt clearly thrived being dropped back to six furlongs, he showed his mettle to fight back and beat The Lir Jet - who briefly headed Ventura Tormenta inside the final 100 metres - by a short-head with Tiger Tanaka (Clodovil) another neck away in third.

“We’ve always liked him which was why we took him to Ascot first time, but I have to admit I slightly regretted that afterwards, dropping him in so deep,” said Hannon.

“He’s just a lovely colt. Something like the Morny or the Gimcrack might be next. I wouldn’t be keen on supplementing him for the Phoenix, I’ve no idea why the Irish races closed so early this season.

“The Morny is a lovely race on a lovely flat track and we want to keep progressing if we can – he’s won his Group Two having bypassed a Listed and Group Three. He’s a real gentleman.

“I’m delighted for Middleham Park. It was Tim Palin’s (Middleham director of racing) idea to run in it, as I was looking at the Listed race at Newbury (won by Method) and he got it dead right. I still thought we were beaten in the photo.”

A £95,000 purchase by Peter and Ross Doyle at the Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale, the colt is out of unplaced Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Midnight Oasis, whose seven runners to race have all been winners, while this is her first stakes winner.

Midnight Oasis herself is out of Midnight Shift (Night Shift) - the dam of Group 3 winner Miss Anabaa (Anabaa), the grandam of Listed scorer Enjazaat (Acclamation).

Midnight Shift herself is the grandam of Listed-winning trio Minalisa (Oasis Dream), Fly On The Night (Equiano) and Mubtasimah (Dark Angel).

Acclamation stood at Rathbarry Stud for a fee of €35,000 in 2020.
