The Richard Hannon-trained Chindit (2 c ex Always A Dream by Oasis Dream) landed the Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Ascot on Saturday and in the process handed Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) with his 13th stakes winner.

Now unbeaten in two career starts, the two-year-old colt surged clear to beat the China Horse Club-raced Cobh (Kodi Bear) by a length and three-quarters, while Godolphin’s Naval Crown (Dubawi) finished another length and a half away in third.

"He felt like he was half-speeding all the way, I was behind two form horses in the race so I was happy where I was sitting, but I didn’t think he’d pick up that well,” said winning jockey Pat Dobbs.

“He has a good turn of foot and loves fast ground. He’s by a very underrated sire I think, Wootton Bassett. He has good looking horses, their minds are very good and they’re good movers.”

Purchased by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 65,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling from the Kilminfoyle House Stud draft, Chindit is out of winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Always A Dream.

The colt’s third dam is Listed winner Out West (Gone West), who is herself the dam of dual Group 1 winner and now sire Motivator (Montjeu), Hardwicke Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner McArthur (Montjeu) and Listed winner Imperial Star (Fantastic Light).

The Haras d’Etreham-based Wootton Bassett’s progeny is headed by dual Group 1 winner Almanzor, who will stand at Cambridge Stud for a fee of NZ$30,000 (plus GST) this season.
