The Clive Cox-trained Supremacy (2 c ex Triggers Broom by Arcano) emulated his sire Mehmas’ (Acclamation) 2016 victory in the Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday and in the process handed Tally Ho Stud’s first-season with his second stakes winner.

Last seen breaking his maiden at the second time of asking at Windsor, Supremacy jumped smartly from stalls and was sent straight to the front by Adam Kirby and looked comfortable throughout the race.

As the race began to unfold behind him, Kirby asked the two-year-old for his effort and he scampered away to score an emphatic four length victory over the William Haggas-trained Yazaman (Kodiac), while Lauded (Acclamation) came home another neck away in third.

It was a case of deja-vu for Cox and Kirby who landed the race 12 months ago with subsequent Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winner Golden Horde (Lethal Force) and Cox said he deemed this colt also a Group 1 winner in the making.

“I don’t see any reason why he can’t develop into a Commonwealth Cup winner,” said Cox. “It was one of the comments Adam said after the race, that he is not just a horse for this year.

“With the early rise here we were trying to be a bit conservative, but it worked well and he put it to bed when he changed gear, which was really impressive.”

Cox has enjoyed a good season with his juveniles including landing the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) with Nando Parrado (Kodiac) at Royal Ascot in June and the Lambourn-based trainer said he was happy with the two-year-olds he had assembled at the beginning of the season.

“I was happy with my two-year-old’s coming into the season,” said Cox. “But I always pinch myself when things are going as well as they are. A Group 2 at Royal Ascot and then winning the Richmond for the second year running is pretty special.”

On first season sire Mehmas, Cox said: “Being the first season, I would be very pleased. He has a wonderful mind this horse and he’s clearly very talented - so I am very impressed with them (Mehmas’).”

Purchased by his trainer for £65,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale from the Owenstown Stud draft, he hails from a family Cox knows well, with the colt’s dam - Triggers Broom (Arcano) - being a half-sister to Beatrix Potter (Cadeaux Genereux), who is the dam of Group 2 winner Pierre Lapin (Cappella Sansevero) and the trainer’s former sprinting star Harry Angel (Dark Angel), who now shuttles to Darley’s Kelvinside base.

Meanwhile, Cox also saddled Xtension (Xaar), a half-brother to Triggers Broom, to win the Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at 2009 Glorious Goodwood Festival and he would go on to win the Hong Kong Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) twice for John Moore.

Triggers Boom’s other two foals have also been winners, while she is also a half-sister to A Huge Dream (Refuse To Bend) - the dam of Listed winner Mrs Gallagher (Oasis Dream).

Supremacy joins Listed winner Method as the stallion’s other stakes winner and he stood at Tally-Ho for a fee of €7,500 in 2020.
