Darley stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill) looks to have another promising two-year-old in his 2020 crop in the form of the Marco Botti-trained Praise Of Shadows (2 c ex Moon Over Water by Galileo) who broke his maiden at the first time of asking over seven furlongs at Chester on Monday.

The two-year-old colt proved far too good for his rivals, eventually pulling away in the closing stages to beat Commonsensical (Bated Breath) by an impressive three lengths, while Kodiac Brown Bear (Kodiac) finished another length and a quarter away in third.

Purchased by New Approach Bloodstock for 62,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale from the Castlebridge Consignment draft, the two-year-old colt is out of the placed Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Moon Over Water, who was purchased by High Valley Equine for 40,000gns at the 2018 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, having produced Praise Of Shadows earlier in the year.

Moon Over Water herself is out of Lowther Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner Velvet Moon (Shaadi), making her a half-sister to 2003 Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Moon Ballard (Singspiel) and the dam of dual Group 2 winner Telescope (Galileo).

Further back the colt’s third dam - Park Special (Relkino) - produced dual Italian Group 1 winner Central Park (In The Wings) and Lancashire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m3.5f) winner Mellow Park (In The Wings).

Park Special also produced stakes-placed mare Park Esteem (Singspiel)  - the dam of Heatherlie Handicap (Listed, 1700m) winner Great Esteem (Redoute’s Choice), who also finished second in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), and Port Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1800m) winner High Esteem (Redoute’s Choice).

The colt is bred on the same cross as Group 3 winner Folkswood and Listed scorer Beau Ideal.

Exceed And Excel's progeny is headed by 15 top-flight winners including Microphone, who will stand his first season alongside the stallion at Darley's Kelvinside in 2020, while fellow elite level winner Exceedance will join the Vinery Stud roster this spring. Exceed And Excel himself will stand for $132,000 (inc GST) at Kelvinside.
