A trip to Deauville paid off for German trainer Henk Grewe, as Thorin (3 c ex Taita by Big Shuffle) sprung a surprise in the Prix Daphnis (Gr 3, 1600m) on Saturday and in the process became the 44th stakes winner for Gestut Auenquelle-based resident Soldier Hollow (In The Wings).

Last seen running third in the Fritz Henkel Stiftung Rennen (Gr 3, 1600m), the three-year-old colt pulled clear in the final stages to beat the British raider Tammani (Make Believe) by a length and a quarter. Kenway (Galiway) finished another half a length further back in third.

The colt is out of Listed-placed mare Taita (Big Shuffle), making him a half-brother to Group 3 winners Tai Chi (High Chaparral) and Taraja (High Chaparral), while he is also a half-brother to Takenja (Dubawi), who was placed at Listed level.

Taita herself is a half-sister to the dam of Listed winner Think Of Me (So You Think), while further back this is family of Listed-winning duo Tamacana (Windwurf) and Surry Star (Dubawi) and Kolner Herbst Stuten Meile (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Turning Light (Fantastic Light).

Soldier Hollow’s progeny is headed by five Group 1 winners, including Ivanhowe, whose four victories at elite level include the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). The stallion stood at Gestut Auenquelle in Germany for a fee of €30,000 in 2020.
