The Juddmonte Farms stallion Bated Breath (Dansili) chalked up his 16th stakes winner on Saturday as his son Makaloun (2 c ex Makana by Dalakhani) successfully defended his unbeaten record in the Criterium du Fonds Europeen de L'Elevage (Listed, 1600m) at Deauville.

Stepping into stakes company for the first time having taken out his two previous starts, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained two-year-old repelled the advances of Euphoria (Sepoy), eventually beating her by a length, while Shut The Box (Pedro The Great) was a further head back in third.

Bred and raced by the Aga Khan, the colt is one of three winners out of the dual-winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Makana, who is herself a half-sister to Listed Markazi (Dark Angel).

Bated Breath stood at Juddmonte Farm’s Banstead Manor base in Newmarket for a fee of £12,500 in 2020.

Meanwhile at York, Tally-Ho Stud based first season sire Mehmas (Acclamation) continued his extraordinary start at stud as he sired his second stakes winner in as many days, taking his overall tally to four as the Nigel Tinkler-trained Acklam Express (2 g ex York Express by Vale Of York) landed the Julia Graves Roses Stakes (Listed, 5f).

The two-year-old edged out Queen Of Rio (Prince Of Lir) by a nose and Nomadic Empire (Kodiac) was another head away in third.

Purchased by his trainer and Jamie Piggott for €26,000 at the 2019 Goffs Ireland Sportsman's Yearling Sale, Acklam Express is a son of the placed mare York Express (Vale Of York), who is a half-sister to Indian Listed-winning pair Multitude (Multidimensional) and Sheryl (Multidimensional).

The gelding’s third dam is July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) runner-up Vaigly Star (Star Appeal), who is the dam of Greenham Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Yalaietanee (Sadler’s Wells) and Group 3 winner Sahara Star (Green Desert), who in turn produced Flying Childers Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) winner Land Of Dreams (Cadeaux Genereux) - the dam of multiple Group 1 winner and former shuttler Dream Ahead (Diktat) and Listed winner Into The Dark (Rainbow Quest).

Land Of Dreams is also the grandam of Group 1 winner Fairyland (Kodiac) and Now Or Later (Bushranger), who landed the Blazer Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in 2017.

Acklam Express follows up the win of Minzaal, who landed the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York on Friday and they join Group 2 winner Supremacy and Listed winner Method as Mehmas’ other stakes winners and he stood for a fee of €7,500 in 2020.
